Default Yet Another Rattle Noise Thread

Hi guys,

I know rattles / ringing noises are common but I'm curious what's causing mine. I searched and found a lot of threads on other rattles but haven't seen anyone talk about what I've got going on. Any ideas?

Basically... my rattle (and it sounds just like those little rattles you'd buy for a baby to shake, except continuous) comes from the front of the car. It exactly and exclusively correlates to engine RPM and is present in all gears, though less noticeable on higher gears presumably due to extra wind noise and road noise. It will happen on accelaration AND deceleration, as well as steady cruise. In short, it's ever-present. Some days it seems quieter than other days, or maybe that's just me imagining it.

Car is a 2003 Z06, 22800 miles, completely stock. I'd like to know of any ideas or thoughts on what it is! It's not really that much of a nuisance but my curiosity is killing me. (and I guess I'd like to know if it's more than a harmless rattle as well)

I have a 03 with 7000 miles don't make a sound.. If it did I would have to fine out what it is.. Not to mention something might be WRONG... It would drive me crazy.

The first question would be if you can hear it from outside the car, with hood open. Have you tried that yet? If you can hear it, what area of the front specifically is it coming from?

OK, found out another crucial detail...

The noise is clutch-related somehow. The noise completely disappears if I press the clutch pedal down. The noise is present anytime the clutch pedal is released, in any gear, at any speed. Does this narrow things down? It's a scratchy - scrapey rattle that is continuous.

I know what sound your talking about, and I've been told it is normal.
Some of these noises drive me nuts as I am always wondering if something is going wrong.............half the time I think I'm hearing things that aren't there just because I'm paying too much attention and my mind is making the noises for me....

One thing that may help is a louder exhaust, and to turn up the radio

by the way same car.....Black '03 w/30k miles

Throwout bearing maybe? Does it disappear without completely depressing the clutch pedal - just enough to move the throwout bearing into firm contact with the clutch?

If you can hear it from outside the car with the hood up I would leave the car on and try to track down the noise. Find out things like top/bottom side, driver/passenger side, front/back/middle.

Hope you find out what it is, and by the way same car 03 blk with 63,000miles and no noises.

It's the throwout bearing. I had a similar noise in my ZO6 and when I converted it to automatic the sound was gone. It's common.

Thanks for the replies everyone. It does seem like the throwout bearing... it makes sense. As far as the noise disappearing when I press the clutch pedal... it does indeed disappear, right AT the point where the clutch disengages.

Now, even if this is normal... is there a repair that can quiet it? Is it the throwout bearing itself or something else causing it to rattle?
