Default The official stupid C5 question thread

I just purchased my C5 last fall and have a few questions I have been afraid to ask. So lets consider this the official stupid question thread…….don’t be afraid to ask that question that you have always felt too embarrassed to ask. Just add your question with a number that can be referenced in the answer.

1. Did all convertibles come with the standard seats or was sport seats an option?
2. Do all aftermarket cat back systems come in 4 pieces, or are some of them in 2 pieces like the stock exhaust?
3. What is the top speed of the non Z06 C5 and can anybody confirm this?
4. How often does the synthetic oil need changed in the C5? Also, anything special about the C5 I need to know about when changing the oil?
5. What is the recommended trans service interval?

1. Sport seats were an option, far as I know Z06 models didn't come with them cause of the electric motors that weighed so much.
3. If memory serves it's 176, Z06 models actually had a lower top speed cause of lower gearing - and the cars are gear limited in 5th gear cause 6th doesn't have enough power to pull up past 5th gear redline
4. watch the oil life meter in the trip section of the dash options, change it when you get into single digits.
5. if it's a manual every 50k should be sufficient, if you drive hard or track do it once a year or so.

may not be perfect answers, but they are pretty damn close...

1. Did all convertibles come with the standard seats or was sport seats an option?

Not sure about all years of C5, but Sport Seats were a reg production option in Verts.

2. Do all aftermarket cat back systems come in 4 pieces, or are some of them in 2 pieces like the stock exhaust?

I have seen a couple, but they're easier to install in pieces. Just adjust them and tack weld them into place.

3. What is the top speed of the non Z06 C5 and can anybody confirm this?

The magazines say 167 for the 6sp coupe (in 5th). Thier word is good enough for me. I'm not sure about the Z.

4. How often does the synthetic oil need changed in the C5? Also, anything special about the C5 I need to know about when changing the oil?

The DIC will give you a percentage of oil life remaining. Some owners will still go 3k, some 5K, some change once a year (low mi drivers) some wait for the DIC - up to about 15k for some. If you're in a hot, dry, dusty climate, I'd recommend a lower mi change routine. I go 5K between changes. Its an easy number to remember.

There is a Delco Gold synthetic filter (UPF44) for our C5's It traps a smaller particle than cheaper paper filters. Contact Bob at Fitchner Chevy - a supporting dealer here on the forum. Great folks. West Coast has them too.

http://www.westcoastcorvette.com/p-9...il-filter.aspx

To reset the oil life, pump the throttle 3 times with the engine off and key on. You can also do this through the menu on the DIC.

5. What is the recommended trans service interval?
I'm not sure one this one. Check this thread >

Nice slingshot rail! I hope you wear a cup

1. Sport seats were an option.
2. All the aftermarket cat back systems I've seen have been in four pieces.
3. Top speed for the coupe was 175 with the vert a little slower.
4. The oil should be changed according to your oil life monitor on the DIC - or at least yearly if you don't drive it enough to have the computer tell you it is time to change the oil.

1. Did all convertibles come with the standard seats or was sport seats an option? No. Mine has sports seats
2. Do all aftermarket cat back systems come in 4 pieces, or are some of them in 2 pieces like the stock exhaust? Got me on that one
3. What is the top speed of the non Z06 C5 and can anybody confirm this? I'd seen 178 but were in the right ballpark. Best I've seen so far is 120 (down a runway)
4. How often does the synthetic oil need changed in the C5? Also, anything special about the C5 I need to know about when changing the oil? Use the DIC Oil Life Monitor - its a good calculation but change it at least every year.
5. What is the recommended trans service interval? According to the service schedule change the fluid in an A4 at 50k miles. The book also says MN6 fluid doesn't need changing

4. Here's a tip on the oil...if you do it yourself: After all has drained, tip up the rear end an extra inch or three and watch another 1/4 quart come out. Good to the last drop. Sweet.

Default stupid question to add

6. What type of Transfluid is the longest lasting best you could recommend?
7. Best type of oil to recommend? Live in MD so east coast cool climate, very humid.
8. I know 6 and 7 are probably opinions but I am sure a couple will come up more then once.

remember to be specific as to the car you're working on, we know it's a C5 but there are lots of different models/options out there that will all have impact on answers. case in point are you asking about a manual trans or auto?

6 - Regardless of if it's a manual or auto, AmsOil ATF.
7 - Mobil-1 5-30 factory fill

^^Don't have the specific answers to your questions but I can lead you to the right place.

First off, your owners manual should have information about changing fluids.

Second, in terms of options available check out this site.

http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/specs/

If I recall correctly, the top speed of the coupe is about 175 mph. The coupe has the highest top speed of all the C5s because it is the most aerodynamic of the 3 styles.
