Default Chip in Windshield Step IN

It seems that the corvette is prone to getting chips in the windshield. One day looking through the auto store I came across

Fix-A-Windshield™ Do-It-Yourself Windshield Repair Kit repairs chips and cracks quickly and easily!
  • Minimizes the appearance, and stops the spread of chips and cracks in your windshield.
  • Easy to use - takes only minutes!
  • Product removes air from the break, fills it with a durable resin, and makes it even stronger than before.
  • The repair is almost invisible
  • Kit includes:1 gram bottle of repair resin, repair device, curing strips, sleeve razor blade, and instruction sheet
  • Kit is good for multiple repairs
I decided to try it out on the wife's Audi (why ruin the vette ). She had a simple chip that left some small rings and was more annoying than anything.

Well I used the stuff above and it filled in the chip 100%. It took maybe 20 mins, but 10 mins was wainting for the resin to dry. Doesn't even look like there was ever a chip. Now this was not a big chip, but I think with some time you can repair larger size chips. Figure for $10.00 it is better than paying $80.00 at a garage to do it.

Do you think this would work on a pit? I had a rock hit my windshield on my Z and it left a pit, but not very big.

I think so. It fills in the area with a resin that dries clear.

I should of taken a picture of before and after. The pit I worked on was like a rock hitting the windshield. It left a small hole and some gray half circle above and below of the center.

It comes with a plastic 4 leg suction cup holder. The holder has a center threaded area. That area needs to be center over the chip. You then have another piece that threads into the center area and you tighten that down so it is flush with the windshield.

You then add some provided resin to the center piece. When you do that there is another piece that goes inside the center piece to force the resin out of the center and into the windshield.

Once that is done you remove the suction cups and add a drop of resin to the top. You cover the resin with a plastic film provided and let dry. You remove the film and then scrape off the excess resin.

Tonight I will take some pics of how it works. It makes sense when you see it....

Bob,
When I first saw this thread, I thought........How the hell can you get a chip in the windshield when you don't even have an engine in???

I've used these products before. They work really well, but at certain light angles, you can still tell the repair. It has to do with the different refractive light index of the plastic filler and the glass. Still, much better than the alternatives.

Only when the windshields gets to the consistance of the surface of the moon is it time to replace, especially if you have HUD. That's some highway robbery there.

I've used the Fix-A-Windshield several times. It does a great job. I take one with me when traveling. I picked mine up at Wal-Mart.

I will be at the shop tomorrow putting in the race seats and then it goes in the Tuning line. Many customers need their cars tuned for the GTO vs Vette competition Sunday (nice that ECS has both GTOs and Vettes) so might have to wait until next week. I wanted to bring it so people could see the new engine so we will see....

I should check this out. I got a rock chip (pit) about 4 weeks into a brand new windshield on the passenger side. Ticked me off. Another semi (carrying a bull dozer covered in dried mud and rock, so it was dropping stuff all over the interstate) kicked a rock back and I wasn't even that close. Twice semi's have whacked my windshield.

You can also check with your insurance company. Alot of them will do chip repair for no cost (deductable). Usually one a year.

I've had several chips in various cars/trucks fixed at no charge, paid for by my insurance company. As stated, they'd much rather pay for a chip fix instead of a new windshield!

I had both a chip (bb type and a pit) The chip filled in to the point where I forgot where it was and I put a drop of the resin in the pit and covered it with masking tape and let it dry about three hours. Removed the tape and cut off the extra resin with a GEM razor blade and it filled in great.
