im lucky my friend knew of a really good and cheap place here in san diego. they charged me 240 for a new ac delco starter and labor got a great deal when the waterpump went also. is there no other place that will do it besides the dealership??
High, Compared to what? I own a retail store and am familliar with the costs of doing business. I honestly don't know how they do it for as cheap as $99.00. Tech hourly pay, service writer, mainenance guy and equipment, insurance, taxes, wear on major equipment (lifts compressors etc), rent/mortgage, advertising,....
I an not in the business, but a shop that gives you a "cheap" hourly charge is either not paying some of these hefth bills, or is "padding" the bill in another fashion. No matter how you cut it someone has to pay these expenses in some way.
You can't compare dealers to any other type of shop just look at the building and all who occupies it in a day.All a side if you can get another shop to do it lets say 80 dollars over 3 hours what do you save 57 dollars not alot for quality and no how.
I mostly try and do the work myself but this was beyond my ability, my local shop guys ($70/hour) did not want to touch the F45 shocks so the stealership was my last option. Lesson learnt
It's amazing that the shop passed on this, because there's nothing special about them if you use simulators. They're even easier to remove, as they're not gas-charged.
You could do this yourself in about 2-3 hours with a handful of wrenches and a floor jack. I would highly recommend posting this in the Midwest regional section. As others have said, it's quite likely that someone else would be willing and able to help you out.
...The dealership I use charges $47/hour for labor.
Holy cow... are you sure that's not $47 per half-hour. That's pretty good for dealership. The Chevy dealer by me is $90/hour when I checked a year and a half ago... I'd bet they're at $100/hour now.
They are already changing the shocks, it will only take them a few seconds to plug in the simulators during the process.
That's double dipping the charge, it may depend on where you are but usually it's illegal. That would be the same as charging you 1/2 hour labor to change your A/C belt and then charging you another 1/2 hour labor to change your serpentine belt. Even though you have to take off one to get to the other anyway.
If you have to go there, I'd get in contact with their regional manager if they still insist on charging that extra 50 bucks.
