I do not have a garage and my 01 Vette is parked in the back of my house and covered, when I open the hood I see rat crap around the wiring on the frame rail. I cleaned the entire engine bay, and the next day there is more crap in the same spot. I am scared that these thing will eat my wiring harness, any help would be appreciated.
Are you driving the car everyday or once a week? The longer it sits, the greater the invitation. In a similar vein, you might want to check your HVAC blower and ducting. Mice love to make homes there. Here's what I found in my blower,
try a few boxes of dcon and get rid of them do a search in the c4 section there were a few posts about some kind of soap bar that repels them good luck

Get some GLUE traps and set then around the Vette with Peanut Butter in te center!
Tha RAT will go for the Peanut Butter and get glued to the trap and it will remain alive so you can do what you want with it!
I do not want to get into animal rights so do what you think is best with it once it is stuck!

Here in Vermont rumor has it that altoid mints placed around the affected area will repel the little buggers. I know sounds weird but the Vets Brother told me he uses it on his collector car and it works ,You can even put them inside and just leave them in the open tin container... Since wire harnesses aren't wrapped with linen anymore mice aren't to interested in chewing . More just making a mess . Hope this helps cant really loose $ 1.59 for a tin ,worth a shot ..

I've heard about using Irish Spring also. Reportedly works so you might want to give it a try.
We have huge rat problems around here and the vector control guys recommend making sure that you kill any snails around the place and keep the dog poop cleaned up. Sounds like B.S. but it does seem to help. Also you could try to avoid parking near hedges or trees as the varmints prowl in there for the snails and stuff. We had to replace a harness in the '02 vert after rat fink chewed the heck out of it.

I would be doin' the Irish Spring right away tomorrow on St. Patty's Day! They will repel them vs. you having to remove them once they are caught/trapped w peanut butter.
The last thing you want is a messed up wiring harness.
Before going to work tonight, I put a old fashion large mouse trap the one with the spring under my vette. I just got home and looked under the car, and what do I see, a LARGE rat cought in the trap, already dead. The size of this rat is about the size of a brick. Hopefully this is the rat that was camping out in my engine compartment.

Looks like you caught that one but he has friends. They're attracted by the warmth of the engine bay at this time of the year. We used to get them in the garage when the farmer cleared out the barn for the sheep. They'd migrate across the road and set up shop. Trouble is they do massive amounts of damage when they start nesting as well as the risk of disease.
I'd drop a tray of rat poison in a small dish. They then take themselves off to look for water and dont make a mess when thy move on. Don't forget to take it out before you drive though.
