Default Service Column lock

I have a 2000 C5 that just showed the dreaded service cloumn lock. The harness has been installed on the recall, but the locking plate is still in there. I have a CLB ordered and will be here tomorrow. What I am trying to figure out is this:

1: Do I need to get the locking plate removed?
2: Do I need to get all the codes cleared before installing the CLB?
3: Should I let the dealer install the CLB?
4: Once the locking plates is removed and the K harness is still there, and if they reflash the PCM. Will this cure the column lock code?

after repeated issues i had the lock plate removed to remove any possibility of having the steering lock up.

They need to remove the codes

after repeated issues i found out that if i leave my vette off a tender for the winter or for long periods of storage time, you get the message due to low battery charge. I have recreated the issue so i know they aren't just pulling my chain.

I thought they were full of it since the battery had enough to start the car.

No

Its a good idea right before you start it up after install.

3: Should I let the dealer install the CLB?
No. Go to www.ls1howto.com scroll down about half way on the right side click to get illustrated instructions.

4: Once the locking plates is removed and the K harness is still there, and if they reflash the PCM. Will this cure the column lock code?

In the instructions you will remove a fuse.

Remove the K harness before you install the CLB.

Yes.

Keep your battery in good shape. Low battery voltage on the PCM bus causes the issue.

Although your steering may not lock any more you still may get the fuel cut off.

Well the CLB supplies the correct signal so it shouldn't reoccur.

I was concerned about the fuel cutoff as well after I installed the column lock bypass on my '97. I talked to the dealer and they told me the bypass takes care of all of that (truth to this?). They also ran the VIN on my car and informed me that there was no recall on mine even though it locked up and I was unable to drive it.

Installing the CLB only took about 30 minutes for me. However - putting the lower dash back together took much longer.

Thanks for the help, talked to the dealer and they are going to warranty everything. So basically they are paying for the CLB and also going to install it for me for free. Let's hope this resolves that little problem. Will keep you updated if there are any changes. We tried to do everything that everyone posted on the forum to no luck though. So only option is dealer now. But grateful to everyone and the help they have shown and the options and ideas they gave to help me remedy this situation.

Sounds like a good dealer you have there - best of luck with the fix.

You're very fortunate that your dealership is honouring the warranty...
I had all 3 recalls done & it still locked...My dealership charged me an arm & a leg to fix it, but I just ordered a CLB so hopefully it won't happen again....

Default 1st startup this yr.-"Service Column lock"

I just fired up my C5 to take it for a spring drive. I can't get it out of the garage due the "service column lock" message in the DIC. I have had the fix done by the dealer recall.
a. I have had the battery on a voltage tender during the winter. I guess I should charge up my battery and see what happens.

b. If the battery fixes the problem, should I install that CLB fix too ??

It is nice to know that others have experienced this and know what to do. I hate to take the car to the dealer!

No longer will GM pay for this, the time has expired. So stay away from the dealer.

You need a good battery. Low voltage on the PCM bus caused the problem.

Refer to the instructions located at www.ls1howto.com scroll down right side #5 and click the link to do the CLB.

Order the CLB and install it. Follow the instructions above.

You'll pull a fuse for a period of time to clear the condition.

If the column is locked you must get it unlocked to proceed with the installation. There are recommendations in these threads on how to get it unlocked, shake wheel back and forth, while turn the key to on, remove the appropriate fuses, and clear the DTC codes.

Hope you get it working again soon.
