Umm... that law was signed in 1974. Blame Nixon if you want to blame a president.

I didn't lay blame or credit. Maybe "drive 55" saved us for the time?

When and why did it end?

the 55 mph limit idea was set primarily because people believed that 55mph was the safest maxiumum possible speed. Auto designers modified their cars so that the gearing in the transmission and differential would give the best effeciency at that speed range. Since in most states, 55 is the fastest.

The current average national speed limit (Alaska, Hawaii and D.C. included) is 63.03 Mph. (source: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_th...ge_speed_limit)

If you notice milage at 60 (+/-5mph) is excellent.

Not sure where you got that idea. It was intended to save fuel:

Instead it led to widespread disrespect for speed limits.

I am surprised no one has mentioned the effects of rolling friction from the tires, air pressure, and size of footprint...also, are you hauling around a full fuel load, or 2 gallons?....not to mention a 50 lb sub-woofer! And, what about an additional 200 lbs from your overweight mate

Perhaps i'm getting my reasoning confused with a more recent reasoning for speed limit regulation....and i still have disrespect for speed limits.
