Most fuel efficient speed?
In the days of rising gas prices there are tons of articles about "how to conserve gas." Many suggest driving at 60 MPH because it is "the most fuel efficient" speed. I realize this is a general statement and does not apply to all, but it made me think, "what is the most fuel efficient speed for the C5?"
Any support out there other than the instant MPG in the dash?

My engine is most efficient at about 80MPH. Has to do with the cam, etc.

I am also incline to agree on that 80 mph as well. I also averaged 30 mpg's in the flat areas. Gotta love this car.

well on a stock car, I think 55-60 is the most fuel efficient speed.

I set my cruise at 81 and sip 30 miles out of a gallon of gas consistently in 6th.

True but you wont get very far very fast.
I'd rather get 5mpg and drive 20 miles to work ($4 in 20 minutes)
vs
walking 20 miles to work ($50 new Nike's - several hours)
but that's just me

last time i took a trip in mine, I stuck to the speed limits (2 tickets in 6 months, going through South Carolina) and in addition to being board out of my mind and making crappy time, my MPG dropped to 29mpg. I've normally kept it to about 10-15 over the limit and gotten 31-32mpg, so that supports the 80mph too.

I wonder what it is for auto's? Different gear ratios should have a different speed/mpg.

This past weekend, we traveled from Phoenix to LA and back in my bone stock '02 A4 w/2:73 gears. There were two of us with our luggage, tires at 35 psi hot, A/C on and running 77-79mph. The car tells me it averaged 27.8 mpg. Those hills east of Palm Springs are killer on the mileage. BTW, I'm sure glad I don't have to buy gas in LA all the time.

At 25 mph in 5th gear (idle cruise) the DIC says 40+ mpg.
I've never driven long enough at that speed to know how accurate the DIC is, but I'm pretty sure 80 mph is not the most fuel-efficient speed!
I would think idle in 6th would be best... which is about 40 mph or so.

Yeah, I think about 45 mph is the most efficient speed for most vehicles. It's low rpm in top gear and wind resistance is minimal.
