Default c6 shifter in c5z???

Is the C6 shifter 100% compatable with a c5z? The reason I ask, is because I recently purchased a 2003 zo6 from an individual. The car is basically like brand new, never driven in the rain, and only has 1800 miles on it. The individual I bought it from used it only as a show car and made a couple of mods. The previous owner put a C6 shifter on the car. It has way to much "play" to it, as when you put it into gear, it can move all the way to the right/left. It also doest return to the central position on its own. Almost like their are no springs. When shifting, it doesnt want to go into 1st and reverse very easily. Is that most likely the result of the C6 shifter, or does the tranny need time to be broke in? Is this common for C5 trannys? In 5th and 6th gear, there is a whinning when I give it gas, but the whinning stops when I let off the gas. Is that normal for this car? Almost sounds like im not going fast enough.

I have the old shifter. Would putting it back on be a wise choice?

I have the C6Z shifter in my C5Z and I don't experience any of the issues you've mentioned or any other problems for that matter. I'm guessing here, but this could be the result of an incorrect installation rather than a compatibility problem.

Regarding the whine you hear in 5th and 6th gear... do a search on the forum for this. I think I've read about others having a similar problem.

Good luck!

Default Same exact shifter arm assy...............

Same exact shifter with some obvious differences, one : the C6 arm is angled. Two : the shifter **** and attachment design ( C6 slips on and is retained with a bolt low down on the **** base. The C5 uses 9/16-18 threads and the dreaded wedge). But the 4 bolt shift plate bolts to the shift box exactly the same.

The shifter is easy to align. Check out this post by Patches (one of a multitude of post on the subject ) read the links in the post as well.http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...c6+zo6+shifter

As far as noise , get use to it , most clutch assy and trannys and differentials make noise. But switching to a synthetic oil will help with noise and shifting.

The sloppy feel could be attributed to a proceedure that reduces the spring pressure on the detent assy. Check with the previous owner to see if this was done . It is very easy to fix.

No break in is needed for the tranny.

You could also make sure that the 4 bolts of the shifter assy are still torqued. Ask the previous owner if he swapped the shift box as well as the shifter arm assy and if "yes " which model ( C6 or C6 ZO6). There are three torx bolts that bolt the shift box to the tunnel and that box needs to be aligned as well to get the tranny to shift perfect.

I've done three of these C6 Z06 shifter assy swaps without problems , thanks to the forums help and the write up from Patches.
Hope this helps.

I have the C6 shifter in and there's no slop. It is self centering. I would bet the previous poster is correct in that someone did the detente adjustment and put in a thick washer.

Sounds to me like it only has the shift ****, and the old C5 shifter under it.
