I have a 2000 vert. and the radio plays but the antenna will not rise up or down when turned on or off. How hard is it to remove or repair this problem. Is this a simple solution or do I just replace the whole unit.
I recently had the same issue with my ant. it is very simple to replace. you'll have to go through the tail light and take out some interior sections of the trunk liner. a few nuts and bolts and clips/ connectors and
there is a long piece of thoothed plastic, looks like a ziptye with a zipper end, if that is disconnected or broken then the rod wont raise. if the motor to the unit is bad then it wont go up and down either. i am unaware of any other way to troubleshoot the problem, but my issue sounds the same.
Thanks for the great thread on repairing the antenna, but how do I know that this the problem and not my motor. I get no noise when I turn on my radio. I have checked the fuses and they are good. I can pull my mast up and down manually, it just doesn't work when the radio is turned on or off. Do you think by replacing the mast it will cure the problem. I just don;t know for sure. I guess it is worth $20 to find out vs. $100 plus to replace.

Try following the How To and take the antenna mast out. You can then check if the plastic serrated section is stripped. If it looks fine you can reinstall it and you're no worse off. As it says in the thread, sometimes the thing disintigrates and leaves pieces in the antenna so you may need to pull it out of the car if its bad.
The circuit is pretty simple. When you put power on the radio it sends a voltage to the antenna. When its extended the motor shuts off. I'd guess it could only be a fuse, ground or connector problem. Should be easy to trace. Its easy to get at the motor by pulling the rear lamp unit so start there.
