Is it ok to use pieces of wood to lift the car with a jack where the pill shaped cut-outs are? Or is it mandatory to use a puck? I don't wanna bend anything on the car.

Look @ some of the past posrs. They tell you how to make make your own "LIFTING PUCKS". The top of the pucks insert into the slotted area @ the lifting points. That way they wont move arround on you. I like going w/ double pucks on the lifting points. Good luck,
No big deal. I just take the round cupped pad off my jack so I have the flat area of the jack to put under the big chunk of frame in the front just inside of the fender. I have to pre-lift the car to get the jack under it so it would be really hard to get the additional height of a puck and the jack pad under it.
I also make sure the floor is clear in that area so the jack will roll. Otherwise, it will tend to slide outwards and into the fender as it goes up.
At the back you only have the 1/2 round cutout spot in the rocker to get the jack under the frame of the car so a puck or something else is necessary. If I'm just looking at wheels or suspension, I'll just jack it up at the front until the back wheel is off the ground.
Some day I'll have to find a low profile jack that can actually get under it.
I used a 6 inch length of 2x4 located where people use the lift pucks for a couple of years with no problem. I track my cars and when I got my 97 the pucks weren't generally available. I lift the whole side of the car by jacking at the front shipping slot. With the 2x4 I never had any damage. When I finally got GM lift pucks from SPS I found out they dented the frame upwards when jacking and changing both tires on a side at a time. My 97 had 2 nice 2 1/2 inch diameter 1/2 inch deep dimples at the front shipping slots and now my 03 Z does also. The reason I now use the pucks is they are thinner than the wood and getting a jack under a car with race tires is harder since the car rides lower.
