When I'm cruising the coolant tenp is 190-195 when I stop
for something then start up it goes to 220. When I get in stop and go traffic the same thing. Coolant is full,30000 miles. Had to put in about a gallon of water last yr because top of tank came loose. Any help on what to do would be appreciated.
If you blow/wash your radator it will help keep the temps a bit lower. The airdam works like a vacuum, and every little piece of junk gets stucked in the radiator.

Just went through mine last week. BTW, there's a fan controller on the parts board if that's an avenue you'd like to travel.
My guess is that you have a sticking thermostat. I recently ran into the same symptoms as you're having in my WS6 LS1 Trans-Am. Changed out the stat, now all is good.
Here is my (NON-EXPERT) view.
When the stat doesn't open all the way, it restricts coolant flow to the radiator. At higher rpms (highway speeds), enough coolant volume is pumping through the system to cool the temps. At lower RPM not enough coolant is getting through the rad becuase on the partially closed stat to cool efficeintly.
Good luck.

This is quite normal and not anything to worry about. The LS1 was designed to run hotter than most are used to seeing in other cars. BTW do NOT put anything other than mix of Dexcool or a comparable coolant that meets GM specs and water in you surge tank or you will be buying a motor.

Hi there,
Those temperatures are in the normal range for the ls1 engine.Thermostats made today either work or they don't. Yours appears to be working. If your radiator is clean you might want to consider adding 2 bottles of water wetter available from auto zone.Note: When you add water to the surge tank it should be distilled water. If your radiator is full of debris (leaves etc.) you may want to consider installing a radiator screen from eliteengineeeringusa.com custom fit easy to install. I did & it keeps most of the junk & damaging rocks out of the front of my radiator about 100 dollars.
Hopes this helps you retired guy.

I remember reading somewhere that 254 degrees was the "danger" point. If the coolant temperature in the LS1 reaches that point, the engine starts firing on only 4 cylinders (I know that sounds strange, but I don't think I dreamed it.) I don't know what the purpose of that is other than to possibly decrease the friction that's taking place in the engine overall and allow the coolant to cool down.
