I have been reading all the post concernogn the Column lock, I have had at least one recall done, cause the K harness is still there.
I went to start the car, 98 coupe a4 37000 mi. and got a message to pull key and wait ten seconds. I did that and now am getting the service column lock. The fuel cuts off over 2 mph. I tried cleaning the key pellet, used my spare key, battery voltage 12.3 volts.
I purchased the CLB from Corvettes of Houston and installed as instructed, I erased all codes from the DIC pulled fuses 25 & 29 for 30 minutes. In short I have followed all the advice I could find so far.
I reinstalled the k harness, no change, disconnected the k harness and hooked up the lock as original, no change. I reinstalled the CLB, no change. What if any thing else could I do to get the car running again.
I just built a new garage to house the car, I guess she wants to stay out to show off, still have my sense of humor, buta not for long if I can't get this figured out.
Thanks for any advice
The CLB will not work if you've had the recall done. You need the original harness for the bypass to work. I don't know what recourse you have, but I'd see if the dealership will do the final recall (I believe there were 3 of them). I hear the final recall works the best.
The CLB did not work on my 98 either. I called Corvettes of Houston and they told me the CLB does not work on all 97 and 98 cars. So I sent it back for a refund and took the car into the dealer for the recall work. They told me that, according to their records, the recall was already done. So I said, then why does my steering column still lock? Part of the recall is to remove the locking pin. So they said, "ok, we will redo it again and charge back the other dealer." When I got it back, they had installed a new K harness, relay, and the removed the locking pin and I didn't have any more problems with it. With the key removed, see if your steering wheel is locked in place. If it does, then they didn't do the recall correctly. Good luck....
I have had recall 04006 performed, according to the the reciepts I have.
I uninstalled the k harness but the problem still exists.
My steering wheel is free to turn even with my key removed.
I hate to see the Dealership, but I am at a loss. I never got the recall notices for 2&3 only 1 and that was done Aug 2004, but I recently found out GM will only do recall until Feb 08.
Any idea of cost?

I'm 99.9% sure that 04006 is only the second fix for the column lock. There is a third, and I'm 100% sure of that. Thus, you're still behind by one which doesn't surprise me as far as dealers are concerned. I bet Joe Blow's mom and pop greasy repair shop in Bowling Green is more current than most dealerships world wide.
I also have a 98. The two different CLBs I purchased do not work. The k harness I purchased made the problem worst. I have had the steering locking mech removed and the tuner put 200 mph on the computer for fuel shut off.

I would bet my mother-in-law, that the k harness went bad. Even if I am wrong, you can still have her.
I had to install the CLB on mine as well (97) and it fixed the column locking part, but EVERY day, at least once a day (if not more) when I start it I have to pull key and wait 10 sec. Been doing this for over a month now.
I just got a 97 vette a few weeks back. I hear the locking mechanism engage when I shut the car off.
I haven't noticed any message (yet). What specifically do I need to look for to see if this will be an issue in the future? Also, if I am stranded has anyone figured out a way to get home with out a tow?
(I know of an older ford truck that wouldnt allow you to remove the key due to a wheel lock issue... you then tapped the key lightly with a hammer and this resolved the issue.... again a samll tip that someone provided and didnt require a tow)

From what I have read here on the Forum, you will get stuck and you will have to have it towed home or to the dealer. The smart thing to do is to try the CLB, or get the factory recalls done on it BEFORE you have a problem.
Thanks for all your help and especially John (cscoked) you hit the nail right on the head with the fuses. I had the time to check all the fuses under the passenger footwell and # 23 was blown. I looked at the fuse information diagram and any fuse that was connected to the BCM was checked in order.
Reinstalled the CLB and no message, I had to take her for a test drive and I can tell you all , I don't know, at what MPH the fuel will cut off at, but she won't cut off at the speed I travel.
Thanks again for all the advice and info, and I wish I could be the last one to post problems with the column lock, but I probably won't
I even got her clean enough to go to the Corvettes at Waterside show (Relay for Life )

Now you can mentor the next poor soul who shows up with a similar issue, who has not bothered to install the CLB! Or as I like to say, "YET".
