Default "Service tire press mon sys" message ques

My 1997 coupe has been throwing the "service tire monitering sys" warning on my dic intermittently. I flipped over to look at the pressures on the left rear it read "LR xxx" but read pressures in all other positions. It'll do this about once every 3 days now. Does that mean the sensor went out (is going out) on me? Is there a battery in there that could go bad, or is it easier to just get a new one. Suggestions?? Thanks guys

If they are the originals, I would believe they are probably going out. I don't have any in my CCW's and I get the message all the time.

I got that same message when I took the car ( 99 ) out of storage. It showed low air so I checked and filled up all the tires. On the drive back home I got that message. So, you think we need a new sensor? I run with run flats so those sensors have to work.

Chances are that yes, the sensor is going bad. First try and retrain the sensors and see if the message reappears. If it does, you might want to replace the sensor. Unfortunately, they are the more expensive sensors to buy.

Having XXX on one wheel means that the receiver is working fine so you just have a failure of the battery on the sensor on that wheel. The battery life is 7 years or so depending on use so its done quite well to go 11 years.

You may find that all your sensors slowly die over the next few months/year. You may want to bite the bullet and replace them all while you're at it.

Unfortunately, you have a 97 so you have the old type sensors which are more expensive. that may affect your decision. Make sure you get the correct sensor as they work at a different frequency to the 2000+ sensor.

One Forum member (Corvette Don) replaces batteries but its not an easy job. The battery is potted into the sensor housing. Given thet the tire needs to come off I just paid up for a new one when I had a problem with one of mine.

I agree with DeeGee....
battery has died in one sensor.

visit www.GMPartshouse.com

or look in the various C5 sections for a post by Gene Culley called C5 April Specials

I would advise you replace them all at the same time. Eventually you are going to have to anyway, and you may as well get it done. This way, you know they are all new and won't have to worry about them for 10 more years.

I think it is BS that the 97-00 sensors are so damned expensive.

Great info. Huge help! I work at a tire shop on the side, so removing the sensors is an easy task. Ill just temporarily replace them with normal valves. I'm really glad you told me the 97-00s are different. You just saved me a huge pain in the butt! Do you know how to get in touch with Corvette Don so I can shoot him a PM? Thanks so much to everyone. This forum is great!
