The past year I have been trying to do my own work on my car because I too am tired of letting others work on it. With me its nothing to do with money or lack of confidece in others, but rather eliminating my own laziness to learn to do it myself. But I've had enough of my periodic laziness. I have had lift for 18 monts now and I didnt get it just to change out the wheels for the track or inspect rotors or oil lines around my turbos

Anyway, I just did mine the other day and i put in 6 quarts. But it actually takes 6.5 quarts or something like that. Unless you tip the car foward, you wont get all the oil out. Personaly, I dont worry about the remaining 1/2 quart. Some jack up their cars in the rear a little higher to get everyhting out. But ya gotta be carefull the car doesnt slide on the jacks

I use the heavy weight 15-50 only because the turbos require the thicker oil. Most guys who run their cars on roadcousres use the thicker oil because it it keeps oil pressure higher. So even if I didnt have the turbos, I would stil use the heavier weight. That just me. Oh ya. Mobil-1 Pure synthetic all the way

There are a number of full synthetics on the market that meet GM4718M - which is the standard for the LSx engines.

The manual recommends 5W-30 in all applications, with 10W-30 as an alternative.

The stated capacity for the LS1 is 6.5 quarts, but I use slightly more than that to get it up to the full mark on the dip stick.

5W30 is the factory fill,,They tested the oil life monitor system with this oil on cars in excess of 200k mi. There are vets out there with 100 and 200k still running out there. It's even good for moderate racing!!

Mobil 1, 5-30 and Mobil I oil filter. There is tons of info on the subject if you do a search. Most folks agree that if you have a STOCK engine 5-30 is the way to go because of such tight tolerances built into the engine.

The oil question will start a wildfire of posts from folks swearing that their way is the best. If GM designed the engine, tested it and recommended Mobil 1, 5-30 then that's what I'll run. Flame suit on. David

Hi, your logic is absolutely sound. However, every drop of lubricant in my car is Amsoil. Reason? First synthetic (since 1976?)
developed, and I hope that they are ahead on the development curve. Perhaps it's foolish, but I'm pleased with it, and the company's fabled self promotion makes me feel secure in using it. I'm sure it's as good as Mobil.

Regards, GRT

I've been thinking about Amsoil, it's the ONLY other oil I would consider using. It just happens, Costco had a great deal on Mobil 1, so I stocked up. David

Takes me about 12 minutes to get it in the air if I hurry and way worth it to change the oil myself. If you have a place to do it, don't let anybody else touch your car......when you do it, you know it's done right!!
