Default Engine Bay Pics - Show them...How did you paint your engine components?

Has anyone ever painted items under thier hoods....ie......coolant tank, etc? I want to paint mine black, dont want it to peel or crack and wondering if it could be done. Maybe a coat or two of primer, 2 coats of black, 3 clear coats......what do you think?

Do a search...you'll find more info than you have time to read about this. There are some amazing underhood pics on here.

Krylon fusion for plastic.
I did mine in White. No primer needed just lots of cleaning before spraying.

I've got some Word files that discuss the underhood component painting. PM me your e-mail address and I'd be glad to send them to you.

I'm in the process of doing mine.

I gave them a coat of etching primer today and a couple of coats of black. I'll start sanding next.

I plan a good few coats of black and maybe flames ...........

If you find your skills are better suited for other things, like me , then, there are some excellent vendors here who do awesome work. Here's mine.

Do a search for Z06JIM, he's my personal favorite paint job. Good Luck with your project.

you need to sand them flat if you dont want the textured look and are going for a smoothie look. If you are just going to paint right over the texture get a red scotchbrite pad from paint store to scuff them really good with and spray an adhesion promotor over the scuff then paint. I prefer using automotive paints due to not have to spray for 2 days and sand in between each coat. u might want to cut away some plastic in the area where your fuel line goes through on the coil covers due to scratching paint when installing and removing them

Painting is easy. Prep is a bit more time consuming and tedious. Sand & prime.......sand & prime.......

I assume you pulled everything out and drained it. How difficult was it to do that?

I used automotive paint and adhesion promoter. For my washer tank I purchased an extra one from fleabay to practice on. I also wanted a close match so I used duplicolor light pewter met and a revel spray system.

Side tanks are easy to pull out just a couple bolts and a couple tubes and/or wires to each. Clean them first, clean them again and then clean them again. I clean with Ajax liquid dish soap - also works wonders on your hands $2.00 vs. high prices of goop/etc. Then spray with brake cleaner then wash again with Ajax. If you don't get them clean and you sand or scotchbrite them, you embed the oil residue into the plastic which results in 10x the work to get the paint to look right.

Some great looking engine bays in this post!!!
