I run a 275-35x18 on a 9.5" wide wheel in front.

275/40 will still be too tall and will rub. you need a 265 or 275/35/18 on a 9.5" front wheel.

you can always try it for yourself by taking off the rear wheels and bolting them on the front. this will give you an idea of how tall that tire size is and how much room you have to work with.
