Default Ipod mount

Thought I'd share some pics of my Sunday project.

I've had this in mind for awhile and finally got around to doing it. I've had my Ipod holder mounted on my ebrake handle with some zip ties. Not very pretty, but having an automatic, I rarely use the ebrake and it was the perfect spot for it--i.e. within easy reach and not tossed in my cup holder or on the passenger seat, and not inside the console where the temps can get quite warm.

I saw this material called "kydex" that another member had used to do some custom work, and I figured it would be just the ticket for what I wanted to do. Now, I can slip the holder onto the ebrake whenever I take my Ipod with me, and remove it quickly when I don't want it on there.

Cool idea. I have some Kydex in the garage but think I will do it a little differently.

What thickness of Kydex did you use, and what measurements did you use before shaping it?

How did you shape it and after you shaped it how sturdy does it become? Never heard of that stuff before.

I don't have my order form anymore so I don't know the exact spec, but it's appoximately 2mm thick or slightly less than 3/32". Overall measurements... it was about 7 3/4" x 3 1/2".

It's a thermo-formable plastic. You heat it (I did it in my oven) and it becomes sort of like inner tube rubber. I had removed my ebrake handle so it would be easy to work with, and just wrapped it with the kydex when it was hot enough to be pliable.
When it cools, it holds whatever shape you put it in and it's very sturdy. Here's a couple links I came across while trying to figure out how to work with it.

Takes two seconds to slip it off the handle.
With an automatic, I rarely use the ebrake, so it's not an issue for me. MN6 guys would have to make the call on that one.

My first attempt at making a this was going to be hard mounted to the right of my radio and hvac, but the fit was too tight between the console bezel and the dash, so I came up with this. For me, it's the perfect placement, but I'm sure others will come up with their own solutions.
