I've never been through anything like what you're experiencing here, but being as **** as I am, I'd have the urge to get in there and do some cleaning and some touch-up painting in the engine bay, etc. You'll have access to nooks and crannies that you'd never have access to with the engine in there. I'm not sure if The Doctors will let you close enough to do that though. Their schedule would probably come into play with doing something like that as well.

I decided to pay the amount above the cost of the LS1 replacement.

Soooo the way I see it is this:

Nephew learns a hard lesson and hopefully learns to respect property of others.

I get an opportunity to do an upgrade that I may never have had before.

My sister is actually grateful for my decision. She obviously needs help handling him.

Any other suggestions while the motor is out? What would you guys do?

You are to be admired, Sir. Only a man of discipline and restraint could take what your nephew did as well as you have. I think things always happen for a reason. I am happy for you that you are getting a better engine out of the deal

You are a better man than I. Coming from a rural NH town, I can't think of the whoopin' I would have received before and after shelling out the cash to repair the damage from my stupidity. I wish your sister the best but your nephew will be incarcerated sooner than later.

The cash difference between an LS1 and an LS6 is minimal (its all relative...no pun intended) I am having my nephew pay for a replacement LS1 and I am paying everything else.

I have ok'd the installation of an LS6 along with headers and intake. I asked Carmine, after telling him my driving habits, if there was anything else he could suggest that I could add for additional power and still have a reliable vehicle.

He mentioned a cam. Before I ok anything else I am asking you guys here on the forum what you would do if you were in my shoes. The car is driven occasionally and I never race it. I like to get on it once in a while like we all do.

I appreciate power as much as the next gut but I don't want a crazy race car.

So let me hear your ideas please.

Bobby A
The main reason I have not considered heads/cam is the added maintenance and reliability issues. You need to change springs at 30K with most cams and there seems to be a lot of failures with springs. I would go with the LS6 with all the added power that provides and leave it at that.

I have a weird feeling taking cash from him (he has it) however part of me says he needs to learn a lesson.
Not only would I take the money but I would take a piece of his a@@ also. He has to learn that there are consequences for his actions. He stole your care for a joy ride, period.

Enough bashing on the kid. He's making restitution - which he should - and is learning his lesson. Now your asking for input on mods.

Have Carmen throw a 224-228 cam in there and an LS6 intake manifold. He'll upgrade the springs and pushrods. Even with stock LS6 heads you should pickup 70-80RWHP with LT's and still be a joy to drive.

My $.02

The person responsible can afford to pay for the damage.
Yeah, have the insurance cover the damage so everyone else's (hope you're not with USAA) rates can go up accordingly...
He should not be taking your toy out for a drive (or was it race) without You saying it's OK. Some times lessons are learned best when they are costly. He's old enough to take the car, He's old enough to pay for the damage, and then beat the $%@ out of him ( kidding). All said and done, your toy is not mint any more and that's not right for you. Friends are God's way of making up for family.

Well not much of an update yet. The car is at the shop and tomorrow I am going to give him half the money and go over the details of whats going to happen with the car.

I will post all the updates as I get them.

Believe me, I want it done badly and I will stay on top of this thread.

Default Dropped some coin

Last week I drove out to Vette Doctors and saw Carmine. Left him with a check for 5G to get started. We sat down and went over some details and numbers and this is what he came up with.

$9800 for a new LS1. This will be paid for by my nephew. I will be putting in an LS6 with headers ($1700) and a mild cam. He will clean out the engine compartment also.

The total will be around $13,000. So I am shelling out $3200 for the upgrades.

Does this sound reasonable? I have never been in a position like this. The shop looks awesome and he has a lot of business. But like I said, this is new to me.

Regardless, I am already committed and I guess I am looking for some solace (?) because of all that went on with the car.

Opinions please..
