I'm having LT's installed next month on my '98 w/80k and am now wondering if HF cats are necessary or not. I've searched this topic and didn't find anything directly relating to this so please chime in.

On a stock set-up I would not even hassle with it!
Now if you are going to do Long Tube Headers then it is worth it and really is a good idea since many come as a kit and are simply just a bolt on set up!
Necessary NO,,advisable YES. Stockers will work,,high flows are much better!! No cats, stupid and irresponsible!!(unless it is a track only car that you tow to the track)

Do you have a list of tracks that are isolated from the same atmosphere the rest of us live under?
If no, what's the difference?
I mean, You say I need to trailer my catless car 6 miles to the local track, but you have no problem if I run it WOT for 50 miles there? Does that make any sense at all?
It sounds like you're trying to be politically correct, but have no idea why.

I had LG Long Tubes on my 02 coupe with Random Tech hi flow cats. I put them (cats) on becasue back in 05 I was feeling as you are now, not 100% sure, should I or shouldn't I.
After driving those 3 years with them I realized they were a big waste of money.. There is absolutely no need plus they are not cheap.
If I were to do it again, I would NOT put cats on the car.
Please don't think that the use of hi flow cats is being "responsible" as mentioned above.
I was not only able to see straight through a brand new Random Technologies Hi-Flow cat but I could make out exactly what I was looking at on the other end. They are about as useful as a hood seal on your Corvette.

Mine w/o cats makes the exhaust smell pretty bad - enough to make me smell like fuel every time I drive the car. I've got a new setup in boxes, and SLP high flow cats are inlcuded.
I am posting this FAQ I came across for the the OPs information purposes only. Before I get attacked as a "tree hugger" let me just say that my position is to do what you know you can get away with in your area. I don't race my car like many of you do, so keeping the OEM converters are not an issue for me. In general, only a handful of states operate to California emissions standards. High-flow cats and LT headers are not considered street legal per federal regulations, so like Peter Pan said, if your state does not do visuals, go for what you can get away with, but be careful.
sometimes the question of needed is probably more based on your states regulations more than anything else. The technology today has gotten very good, and most high flow cats are of a flow thru design.
I personally went with LG pro's and no cats. Looking back I would probably have gone with cats. The sound is amaizing, but like mentioned above I smell like gas after a long time in the car. Good luck!
More information for the OP. The website for Texas emissions testing by county. Travis County does do emissions testing. Hope it helps EDIT: it would appear that some counties are more stringent than others, including Travis County.
After reading some of the replies after mine, maybe I'd change my opinion. If not having cats is going to make you smell gas inside the car and make you smell like gas after driving, then THAT would be enough to make me stay with the cats on my car.
I am glad I heard this info. I never heard this before......
