I assume you have a MN6...
Several people, me included, have had the shifter actuating rod come loose. Once this happens, it is difficult to shift into first or reverse. Good news, the fix is easy. Simply use a little red loctite on the securing bolt's threads and torque to spec. Shifts just like new!
I ofte have trouble getting into 1st or reverse - I'm also using a kirban short shifter.
Where is the actuating rod?
Before you get all excited about mechanical fixes I'd do a tranny drain and refill, and I recommend a good synthetic like royal purple or amsoil,You might be surprised how much this might help. When sitting at a light I like to pop it into neutral (I don't like to keep riding the throw out bearing that long) When doing this about 70% of the time it was cranky getting back into 1st. Did a Royal Purple change and after a little driving it made a remarkable difference. Virtually cured the problem!!
My 98 did the same thing, automatic, there was a servixce bulletin couple yrs ago and said to replace the shifter for the correct fix.......However if you disconnect the selinoid on the shifter it works fine.......But you do lose the locking feature.......Meaning whenever you push the button down it will go into gear..........

Where is the actuating rod?
The rod is attached to the bottom of the shifter. When the Kirban was installed, the actuating rod (attached to the transmission) was secured to the shifter via a pinch bolt. Through vibration, etc., that pinch bolt may work loose, and the actuator rod slips sufficiently to make shifting difficult.
To gain access to the rod, you must remove the console, or at least loosen it enough to gain access to the shifter underneath the console. Then unbolt and lift up the black rubberized cover and you should have access to the pinch bolt. The rod is about 3/8 diameter with a cut out notch to nest with the pinch bolt. Remove the pinch bolt, insert the rod up to the notch, loctite the bolt threads, and install and torque. That should do it!
If you have a vert, you must remove the waterfall before the console will come out.
