I saw it once and only once. it was several months ago and no issues since. I sure hope I don't have to run into that problem.

Looks like you need a Column lock by-pass. That is what happened to mine , same message. Here is a link to one at Corvettes of Houston;

Does not always mean you have a crisis with the column lock. I had that show up on my 97 several times over the 6 years I owned it and never had a column lock problem. One time it occurred as I was waiting for a traffic light to change after the car had been driven for an hour or so.

I used to get this occasionally, seemed to happen when I had a low battery. Once I changed the column lock out hasn't happened since.

Get yourself a Column Lock Bypass and forget about getting stranded due to the column lock issue.

I have had it a few times. It only appears after I start the car and then turn it back off quickly for some reason and then start it back up quickly. I do as it says and have never had a problem.

This message can mean just that your key's resistor pellet may need cleaned. Clean it with alcohol. If this doesn't work, try another key.

To be a column lock problem you must get the "service column lock" message.

I seen it for the first time every on my 98 I thought it was because I was Auto-crossing and turning the wheel when I was starting the car.

Putting a CLB on the early years can actually make this symptom appear, but as others have indicated, this message does not mean you have the dreaded column lock problem...

Are you sure you don't already have one installed? If you try to turn the steering wheel with the key out, does the wheel turn?

Unfortunately, I am one of the early C5 owners that the CLB bypass is of no help, it actually introduced said problem.
