i've been watching these mileage threads lately an have been more interested in paying attention to what my vette does in sucking down gas. the past ~400 hundred miles i've been averaging just about 19-20 mpg. that's a mix of stop & go city traffic and some longer freeway trips (1hr+). no change in driving habits, i.e., plenty of full throttle romps, as well as plenty of stick it in 6th and keep rpms around 1500 at the speed limit cruising.
Impresseive numbers but I'm more impressed by your disiplined approach...I leave my house with good intentions - it's 5 miles on surface streets to a major hwy - but alas, I give in to the tempation of three lane, 1/4 mile on ramp that drops onto the hwy with a posted speed limit of 70 MPH...and then I shift into 3rd... ...damn, there goes the gas mileage.
Quick comment on the DIC/computer MPG and "actual" - my Z is typically off by 1.5 ~ 1.8 MPG. Our SUV is off by over 2 MPG. I tend to go with the computer as its using a constant measure of fuel compared to when I think I've filled the gas tank up...is it full at two clicks, three clicks or when I can see gas at the top? Thats the variance in the math
I am in no way saying that your numbers are wrong... I just don't know how it's possible. I have an 02Z with a Vararam and Corsa Competition Ti exhaust. When I cruise down the highway with cruise at 55-60 I get about 32-33 mpg. How in the world do you AVERAGE 34??? I have always loved the gas mileage that this car gets, but 34?! That's impressive.
Thanks. It was an interesting test,BORING but interesting. You can have power and reasonable mileage.
If you follow Nascar & INDY racing, you will see many times that the fastest car does not always win. It's the one that can make it,by any means,to the line first. This includes some gas-savings by the driver.
The driver that is in the lead with 3 laps to go,and is 1/2 lap short on fuel, usually did not have a good fuel strategy earlier in the run.
Racing is about tenths of a second and gas mileage is about tenths of a gallon. If you do enought things that give you a tenth,it can be the diff between winning or losing or saving a buck at the pump.
