Default HUD prob after w/s replacement

I had the windshield replaced today and asked my Dad to pick it up from the shop. He called to tell me the HUD was acting eratic. Is there a reboot or relearning that has to happen? The windshield was replaced with one that supposedly was for HUD equiped corvettes. The glass man asked specifically if I had the HUD telling me there was difference between no HUD and HUD ready glass. Any suggestions?

There are a few HUD Windshield replacements. I have a friend that replaced his with a cheap generic (non-GM0 replacement and he had all kinds of problems with distortion on his HUD. Check to see if he used the GM replacement windshield.

What exactly is the HUD doing? Just replacing the windshield should not have affected the HUD as far as I know.

I thought the same thing. I have not seen it yet but the HUD showed all the items it could, then went blank, then showed just a few, went blank several times and just showed a few of the items. I will be home in about 2 hours and should be able to see for myself.

Definitely not the windshield. Maybe loose connection to the hud or control panel for the hud.

Ok, just got home to look for myself. Evidently whatever was wrong is no longer happening. I am wondering if the HUD has some kind of sensor that recognizes/senses a new surface to project onto. Everything settled down and seem to be working fine.

so what would happen if one replaced the w/s with a non-HUD version? I guess I don't get why there has to be a difference... what is so special about the HUD w/s?

make sure water didnt get in th hud projector, glass shops use a tool that looks like a sawszal & use a spray bottle of water to lubrcate cutter,an over zealous tech could have gotten water in the projector, good luck!

I am guessing that there is a special reflective coating in the area the HUD projects to but I do not know that for sure. It is working now though.

I have seen many posts in another thread on this subject that said there was no problem using a non-HUD specific windshield with the HUD. I've definitely seen people posting that they can see their HUD just fine with no noticable change when using a non-HUD windshield. Worst case scenario if a non-HUD windshield were used, the HUD might not show up as well in all lighting conditions or perhaps might be blurry, but even that shouldn't happen. Personally I've had my windshield replaced under warranty and I had no problems whatsoever, I assume they replaced it with original equipment.

As far as what you're describing, if the HUD was "acting up" or behaving erratically after a windshield change, that certainly wouldn't have anything to do with the windshield itself, the HUD can't "sense" what type of windshield it's projecting on to. As someone else posted, if it truly was acting up then in all likelihood somebody accidentally did something to damage the HUD or the connections while they were changing the windshield. There could be a loose connection, a short, or moisture could have gotten into it. Obviously all of those could lead to a situation where it would work fine sometimes and other times not.

Perhaps your dad just didn't have the seats and the HUD adjusted properly so that it was clearly in his field of view, so sometimes he saw the HUD and sometimes he didn't. If he's not really familiar with your car that's entirely possible.

O/T a little bit, am I the only one that hates the HUDs on the C6's??? The numbers are way too small and very blurry, and they tried to cram too much info on the screen. I can't stand the way it looks compared to the C5's HUD. I've driven an 06 and an 08 and they both look terrible compared to the C5 IMO (well at least my 2000, as far as I know all the C5 HUDs are the same).

Hi There ,
Sounds like a case of sun flash to me. Does the hud act normal in the shade.

The wiring harness is below the HUD under the dash. It can't be touched from above. A standard windshield works just fine with a HUD. The theory about the installer getting the HUD wet makes the most sense. And, as it dried it went back to working OK. The only caution I would mention is the HUD lens is VERY thin and made out of a flimsy piece of plastic. Mine was shattered when I got it new out of the box. I bought a piece of very thin LEXAN and replaced the lens. Worked great. I sent Josh, the original vendor, a few pieces of the Lexan I had extra for his use if anyone had a damaged one. That is the weak link in the projector assembly. I would worry more about an installer damaging it more than the wiring or projector itself.

Just what I was thinking. If your Dad's not used to driving the vette he would be surprised if it happened.

Just changing the screen would have no effect on the HUD. The most common problems with non HUD screens seem to be double imaging because of the different lamination

Well all is well and no problems since. I forgot about the sun acting on it. I would bet that is exactly what happened. Dad does not like to drive the car so may have been in a hurry to set the seats and did not adjust the brightness or position and got sun flash. Thank you everyone for your help and information.
