GM had them in their Silverado trucks for a while - I believe they have since pulled them out, (2000 to 2006 models). Customers had a tendency to forget about them which caused problems like poor heat circulation and foul smells because they were plugged up. They were rather pricey and didn't really prevent dust from entering the cabin anyway.
Actually,I'm happy that it the C5 doesn't have one.
My daily driver Mercury Sable has one that fits inside the cowl plenum.
It plugs up with debris far short of the recommended 30K mile change interval, and greatly reduces the heater and A/C airflow.
It's also a PITA to replace. I'm planning on just leaving it out next time.

Odd location......has anyone ever tried to change this "filter" ?
I use the foam filter that goes in the cowl vent. Amazing how much crap it actually catches.......you know when you wash it
Keeps my udders from filling up with crap
