Default Haltech Stinger and CA smog?

Well as the title implies, i have gotten a DMV notice saying i need to get a smog on my 02 Zo6... The only modificaiton i have performed is putting a Haltech Stinger on... Question is... are they CA smog legal and will it pass smog with it on there? or do i have to replace it with the stock intake to pass CA **** smog check? If i do have to replace it with the stock part... I remember using a picture instructions from the internet, that i got from this forum (the link anyways) and was wondering if anyone still knew of that link...

Thanks for the help..

Most of them are carb certified however when I looked at a Halltech, I found...

Halltech C5 Stinger 97-2000
Expect 10 RWHP 12 ft. lbs Torque from the original Halltech Stinger. Easy 10 minute install, no cutting, no rain issues, and no warranty problems. Simple Horsepower, without the risk of water damage. Off Road Use Only.

Don't know why since my old K&N was the same set up and had a carb cert. sticker on it.

Just swap the air-bridge with the stock one. When they see the Haltech sticker, it sets off the "Caution" flag.

Halltech Stingers are NOT CARB Certified! But will you have a problem smogging it? Maybe, maybe not. It depends on your smog tech, does it have to be done at a test only place? If you can take it to a smog place of your choice, try a gas station in a "not so good" part of town. Those kind of places might not care, or even notice it's not legal.

You should swap it out with your stock intake. I did the same last year and it gave me a good excuse to thoroughly clean the Stinger's air filter. You may have used my installation procedure when installing your Stinger. It can be found at:

Just buy a Callaway CAI and never worry about that mod again. Stick the EO label that comes with it in the engine bay

Ok, well i am stuck on one part of the removal process. adn was wondering if i can get some input from those who have removed this thing to clean it etc..

I cant seem to get the MAF unit off the Haltech air bridge. I have removed the clamp and it just wont budge... I dont really want to use brute force unless i have to... Is there a secret or easy technique to getting the MAF off the Haltech airbridge? or could the Haltech airbridge have melted and bonded from the engine heat to the MAF?

Thanks for help or suggestions... would like to finish this today, but dont want to take the risk of damaging the MAF unit

Find one that will do a "pre-smog". If nothing is said about the Haltech and it passes the sniffer..than have them smog it

Run it through smog test with the Stinger on it. If you fail the "Visual" part you can bring it back with the stock part on, then they will give you a passing grade. If you don't fail visual, your home free. You should pass the "Smog" test itself with the Stinger on it.

Is CA still doing the sniff test on newer cars with computer controlled emissions? In AZ they surprised me by just hooking my 99 up to the computer at idle.

If you look at the linked page I posted, you'll see a cleaning procedure. I used Simple Green (or something similar) and K&N oil, but please read the procedure before doing it.

The MAF can be a real bear to get off, but try rotating it, one way and then the other, in both axes.

And I recommend that you don't even try to "slip it by". If you get caught, it'll be a real hassle. I went through this Russian Roulette stuff with my 68 and I vowed, never again. Besides, the Stinger probably needs to be cleaned, anyway.

Not only do they do the sniff test, but they require that the vehicle drive wheels be put on rollers so that the the vehicle can be "driven" under real-world conditions at higher than idle engine and vehicle speeds. This all comes AFTER the vehicle's engine bay passes a thorough visual exam. Long tube headers and intakes are prime targets of the smog *****.

Varies by county. Butte County is still static test, unless you have something unusual. But they do the visual inspection, too. Modoc County doesn't have an I/M (Inspection/Maintenance) program at all last I heard. Just get a P.O. box in Tulelake and register the car there But the more urban counties do have the full deal with the dyno test and all.

If you're in one of the inspection-only counties (you say mid-state; could be San Joaquin, which is bad, or Inyo, which is good), best be ready for the full visual inspection.

To get the MAF and airbridge separated, I've just removed the assembly and wiggled the MAF. It did come out with a little persuasion, but no force.

The Vararam looks enough like a GM part (decent quality but not oh-wow polished super-slick) that I am guessing it would sneak by the local smog shops, unless the tech is a Vette guy. But I pulled the big V-R sticker off, and haven't had to have it checked yet.

Good luck. It seems like just meeting or exceeding the emissions requirements should be enough, but the state needs $18B, and if der Governator's marker (a la Charles Barkley) isn't approved by the voters, look for more onerous enforcement as a way to generate fines for revenue. And my Singaporean colleagues think they have it bad in their "fine" city...

You'll be fine. I doubt my ebay intake is CARB certified, they didn't even look at it. It will pass the tailpipe test, they won't even look under the hood if the numbers come out right.

Most smog places cannot even tell the difference between a stock manifold and long tube header.
