Default Column Lock.......quick question

( If ya can't handle "dupe'age", just keep movin..... )

Howdy, have 2001 6 peed...
Last night I Parked at the store, turned ignition key, got
"remove key wait 10 second" message, and the steering wheel locked.
I jerked the wheel a few times, turned the key and it released,
and I drove it home....
Never happened before in 7 years, is this likely to happen again ?

I searched the best I could on here, and I'll order the Bypass from Houston later today, just curious what causes this ....

yes, it could happen again, but I didn't see you say that in addition to the Pull Key message, you also got the service column lock message, which is the real kiss of death. I would suggest continuing with your plan to install a CLB, and that hopefully will eliminate any future problems for you.

...yes, it WILL happen again!!!! Get the CLB ASAP and never have to think about it again

The cause? A poor design, plain an simple. With all of the positive things about the C5, this is one of the few negatives, and it amazes me that GM has never come out with a proper fix for it.

Maybe a little late to the party but your plan is sound. Fit the CLB and you'll have the best solution to the problem. Don't go anywhere near a dealer because that's where most people's troubles start.

If you want to read more, check the sticky in C5 tech. It has way more than you ever wanted to know about the column lock problem - including GMs efforts to fix it (3 times) and now their ddecision not to complete safety recall work under warranty.

I am a new owner and didn't know about the issues until I got on this forum. My dealer installed a GM part and I paid for it. Where do I get CLB for $50.00 everyone is talking about. I have read several post and cant find this place in Houston.

I just bought a C5 3 months ago(6-speed vert) and I've called my local Chevy dealer and they said that the column lock recall had been performed and not to worry about it. Well... I'm worried . Will the CLB from Corvettes of Houston still work even if the recall has been done ? Does anything that GM has done so far in the recall have to be undone for the CLB to work properly? Is the CLB hard to install?

Thanks for the link..........Everything I have read about the CLB is on this forum and most of the guys are talking very easy to install. They also say that it works even after the recall has been done. That is my case, recall has been done, then I paid for it to be done a second time. I am still scared so I will order the CLB to fix for sure.
