this is not a VDI kit, more like a 90 degree universal. VDI opens normally about 30-35degrees out, and goes 90degrees depending on how you adjust it..but the installs i did i let them go for 75degrees to make it an easy reach for the doors to be pulled down...

I did the GT Factory Kit but I would assume the same mods would have to be done no matter which kit it is. The most time consuming part of the install was cutting and shaving the fenders. No modifications to the wiring harness was needed only some minor support brackets for the ECU wiring behind the passenger fender.

Goodluck with the install

Fender trimming????

That got me! No lambo doors for me. If I got near my baby's bodywork with any kind of cutting tool it would end up looking like a Toyota!

Do you actually shave the fender, or just the metal under the fender itself. I love the lambo doors, but if it requires hacking up the fender than I am going to have to reconsider.

It just the inside lip that needs to be trimmed. There’s no template on how much to cut so you do it a little at a time while checking fitment. It’s not as bad as it may seem.

Its a very small amount of trimming and on the inner fender where you dont really see. I did a C-4 and they require no trimming but the wires did have to be extended. The trimming was done with a small cut off wheel on a dremel.

Default Ok so please o please

Ok so, tell me how you guys can justify the price!

I mean seriously, this is straight off their site:

Viewing: Vertical Door Kits » Direct Bolt on Kits » Chevrolet 1997 - 2004 Corvette

Description:

Includes:
# 2 gas shocks
# 2 VDC hinges (one for each side)
# All mounting hardware

Price:
$2,395.00

This is one of the highest price hikes I have ever seen! (read below for why this is probably)

Ok lets break it down:
#2 gas shocks....hmmmm lets go high and say $300
#2 VDC hinges....(yes folks we are talking hinges!) Again lets go high and say they are each custom individually hand built, (which they probably are not!)(the website says they are CNC'd from a machine)(so thats mass produced) I would say $1000 tops for the hinges
#All Mounting hardware.....hmmmm I'll go $100 on the high side.

So that leaves us at $1400... $2395-1400= $995 difference.

I dunno guys, I mean I understand for profits and stuff, but this is sorta nuts. Now here is why I think it is this way:

Only thing I can figure on is that they raise the price this high because they are offereing sponsorship programs. Since those work just like insurance companies, they can split the cost up between the owner and sponsor...thus cutting the cost to the owner by half (which is hmmmm look at that, exactly what I figured they should be costing to begin with!)

So yeh check out the sponsorship stuff if your thinking of going this route....might save you about a thousand.

I had my car sponsored by Team Muscle Machine. they have different levels of sponsorship. Doing and winning shows before you apply helps, but for instance the door kit cost me around $741 + shipping. If you do a lot of shows they have sponsorships that cover anywhere from 30% to 70%. If you want to do nig shows all over the USA I heard they cover up to 100% of your parts cost. They do require you to put a logo on your car so it is on my plexiglass speakerbox cover and on my info board. This is how to do lambo doors cheap but still get a good product. Also I just checked my sposor site and the door kit came from VDI.

Here is where I put my logo, I wont put it on the car.

One of the biggest costs is the material used to build the hinge and the quailty of the gas shocks. I had a friend buy a lower price kit for $500 off fleabay and it looked a lot like my kit. After he installed it ( on his mustang) the difference was visible. The door did not seem stable like the steel used was possibly cheaper or not tempered, the shocks would not lift the door, you had to actually lift the door by yourself and hope the shock would hold it in place. On my kit the door will push itself up I have read that some shocks are only rated at 300-400 lbs and that the good ones are 800-1000. I dont know about you but I dont really want my vette door slamming down due to a faulty or underpowered shock. The final straw came for him when he opened his door and the hinge bearing failed and the door fail off. He now has a more expensive kit that works well every time.

Check out GT Factory's website, the bolt on kit for the C5 is under $2k plus IMO the quality in design is very good in that they use double pistons per door. But I was lucky and found my kit off ebay for $1200.

In the begining my door pushed itself up with alot of force, I hated it. If you were'nt ready for it the door could take your head off. The stock pistons are rated at 150lbs each. I went to Napa and replaced the 4 pistons with 90lbs and now I can open the dooor at any angle i want and have it stay there. Something else someone may want to consider when doing these doors.
