Default Searvice colum lock!!

Well the first nice day it hasn't stormed in Missouri and decide to get the car out and have some fun. I went to the auto hobby shop on base to change the oil and then I was gonna go out and just drive for a while. While I was there I naturally had a lot of looks and people talking to me about what a great looking car it was and I was happy to tell them all the impressing facts about it. Then when I started it to leave I got the "pull key out and wait 10 sec" then the "searvice colum lock". when i backed off the lift the car cut off because I exceeded it 1.5 mph limit. I tried to reset the computer by disconnecting the battery but it didn't work. So i ended up leaving on the back of a wrecker!! The previous owner had the recall done on 5-31-06. I did a search and found the colum lock bypass that you can purchase so unless any body else knows of a way to clear it I will be ordering that later tonight. If anybody has any input on this I could really use it, today is my first time encountering this so I am not very well educated on the problem. Thanks in advance

There was another recall code 04006C where the column lock was removed. This was covered under warrenty by Chevy. I would check with your local dealer. I had my 03 Z06 done earlier this year. Hope this helps - Good Luck!

AAACK! Do not take it to the dealer. They screwed it up once and if they do any of the later mods they will be screwing it up again. Read the column lock sticky. If you had installed a CLB you would not be in this situation. Everyone driving a C5 should read the CLB sticky and install a CLB before your car leaves you stranded and needing to have it towed.

Default Vette mag article this month

Also the current issue of Vette magazine does a complete write up on the column lock issue and the fix. Might be worth a look also, pictures and all that.

I ordered the CLB so it should be here some time next week. Taking it to a dealer is my last resort. Its just weird that I am getting that CID and the colum isn't locked. Lets hope its just the $45 CLB fix!

It was not the dealer that screwed it up, but Chevrolet by install the thing in the first place. Why spend the $45 and the time and effort to install if you don't have too because they cover the cost. Even the sticky you refer to points this out as an alternative recommendation - thats all.

I heard That! Had a brake module replaced under warr. and they talked me into doing the lock recall at the dealer. I got it home and that was it. Had to truck it back in for more repairs. Wish I did the CLB myself. Live and learn and for me it was the hard way. They covered all the cost.

make sure you have a good battery in the car. This can cause the message too.

zee sting,
....I would agree that it was Chevrolet that screwed it up in the first place. The C5 and especially the ZO6 version is a great car but the CL is unreliable and all three of the Chevrolet fixes have been proven to be unreliable. Your dealership provided poor service when they installed that latest fix without telling you that the CLB is a much more reliable solution.

Jeff -

I understand, but how unreliable can the fix be when the pin is removed completely? The CLB is a good fix to over ride the pin from engaging. The 04006C fix removed the pin, so there is nothing there to engage.

Extremely. Problem stops fuel delivery also. You can idle and that's about it.

What slong says is right. You may still have a malfunction that leaves you unable to go more than 2 MPH. Check out the column lock threads that continue to show up on the C5 tech forum. It seems like there are a couple of new ones every week. Some of them are from people who have had the latest fix applied by Chevy dealership no-service departments.

Thanks for everyone's input. I've read all the threads I can find on the steering colum lock and have tried pulling the 23,25,29 fuses to reset the BCM and disconnecting the battery but still the same problem. I called gm to see if there was a warrenty on the recall and it is a 12 month or 12k mile warrenty and unfortunatly mine was done in 06 with 52K on it. It currently has 59k but I am out of time window. . I am waiting to get the CLB that I orderd and hopefully that will fix it while I'm installing that is when I'll check my wires to make sure I don't have a bad ground. Its frustrating to think that I might have to take it to a dealer and pay them to fix something that has been a problem since the factory

Does the actuator not remain in the car with the pin, all the recalls were done on mine and the pin/actuator was a constant, GM removed the lock ring.

I have heard this fuel delivery program change and I do not believe it due to the following that appears in the owners manual, which was printed before any recalls.

PULL KEY - WAIT 10 SEC (Manual Transmission
Only)
: If this message comes on, the steering column
lock system has detected a problem while engaging the
steering column lock. This message may occur when
the ignition key is removed and reinserted before the
steering column lock system fully locks or unlocks the
steering column. To acknowledge that you have read
this message, and to clear it from the display, remove
the ignition key and wait 10 seconds before reinserting
the key into the ignition. If you attempt to operate
your vehicle without removing the key for 10 seconds,
the vehicle’s fuel system will shut off when you reach
1.5 mph (2.4 km/h). If the message stays on after
removing the key and waiting 10 seconds, have your
vehicle taken to an authorized dealer as soon as possible
for diagnosis and repair.
I have installed the COH CLB and all is well, on occasion if I leave the battery off for a while I get the pull key message and I have to let the computer run its cycle again. You will hear the relays click but the actuator does not cycle as before the CLB install.

As a funny the message came back right when GM said my car was ready, right in the pull through area. I said uhh still have the message should have seen them trying to fix it I had to come back the next day. I had the recalls, the K-harness (which is not the CLB), another reprogram, removal of the K-harness and a new actuator installed, thank goodness for the GMPP all of the above FAILED numerous times, installed the $48 CLB and have not had to deal with that crap again.

Good luck.

Is it all the time? I get the message if the battery was low or disconnected, only on the first start attempt. I pull the key wait to hear the relays click in the passenger footwell and all is fine.
