Just noticed it the last 2 weeks. When I start the Z my AC comes on full blast and I get the smell for about 15 seconds. Also my blower fan sounds different. I'm thinking the AC condensate drain hole is restricted or block. Anyone else had this problem?
This is a common problem with many cars. I have found that this is the easy way to fix the problem.
First I run the fan (that pulls ONLY the outside air into the cabin) and then spray Lysol into the fan air intake (usually in the cowl on most cars). This will allow the disinfectant to kill any germs or bacteria causing the mold smell.
If you run your A/C most of the time, get in the habit of hitting the A/C "off" button a mile or two before you get home. Then put the fan speed on high allowing the fan to evaporate any condensation in the condenser that usually sits and causes the mold smell.
My car has that smell too. I thought I had a dead mouse or something in vent system. I'll try spraying Lysol into the air intake. Where is the a/c drain hole? I would like to try that too.
It has happened to both my 03z and a previous 99 trailblazer both by chevy. I dont know the reason or how to fix it. It goes away pretty quick and mine is not that bad.

Don't shut off your car with the A/C on and this will not reoccur.
I have the same thing on my Dodge Ram. It smells like dirty socks or dog ****. Pretty nasty although it only lasts for a bout a minute when I turn on the ac. Luckily I havent had that happy on the Z yet.

Additionally, before shutting down I turned the AC off and ran the heater full for a minute or two.

That is an excellent idea! I guess even if it doens't work you'll get the clean smell of Lysol in the car instead of the mildew stink!

Happens to all cars, not just Vettes or GM. I'm sure the Lysol trick works great, but a dealer can do an AC conditioner. Basically kills the mold and bacteria that can accumulate.
Theres a chance that you may have an accumulation of dead rotting leaves and tree debris in the drivers side drain. That stopped up drain will also destroy your windshield wiper motor control module it the water wets the module. You will be surprised how much crap can accumulate in that well and it STINKS too:
You can reach in between the brake booster and fender to check the three udders.
