I have a 04 coupe that I bought used, I am trying to figure out if the previous owner has installed a steering lock bypass so I can stop being paranoid about it.
Should the sterring wheel lock when you shut the car off? I can hear what I think is the locking motor when I shut the car off or when I put the key in to start, but my wheel is not locked. Im hoping that means the bypass has been installed.
Great info..pay attetion to whether you have a 6 speed ( mn6 ) or automatic ( a4 ).
If you hear the motor running, I would assume you have an automatic,
a4, with a version of the dealer recall fix, ie.. removing the locking plate, which can still leave you stranded..
I need to check as well, I have a 2001 6 speed and the steering wheel does not lock with the key out and I cant hear any motor in the column when I put the key in or take it out. The service record for the car states “RC 04006 ELECTRIC COLUNM LOCK SYSTEM” under the required field actions and also states that there is no current record of outstanding service information. I was going to have a look under the steering column to see if a CLB was installed. Is that where I would find it?

Go to LS1howto.com and on the right hand side click the link for installing the CLB. there you will see excellent photos of the installation.
NO, if the column lock motor is still installed and running, ( locking plate removed ), the motor can still not retract all the way and give the computer an Invalid state..Then I believe you get the 2 mph fuel cut off..Even though the column is not actually locked..
My 04 has a six speed, my steering does not lock and I can here something that sounds like its coming from the steering colum area when I turn the ignition on, and when I shut the ignition off.
I can not get ahold of the previous owner to find out if a CLB was installed. The recall was performed, but with the recall performed shouldn't the steering still lock unless a CLB was installed?

Yes, but I am confused about the sounds you are hearing, sounds like you DO have clb installed. I would still follow clb installation instuctions to see the clb in place, basicly take the knee panel off and take a look,,,good luck..Tom

That happened to me. The funny thing is there was no codes to indicate that it happened so the dealer REFUSED to look at it... CLB to the rescue (Though STILL not installed - DUH!!!)
REMEMBER, as of February 29 of this year GM NO LONGER acceptes responsibility on repairs on this issue. The August issue of Vette Magazine has an article on this issue but fails to mention that GM has bagged on this issue. SUCKS!!!
Don't mean to highjack the thread, but My car has had a GM recall done by a previous owner and I can hear the motor in the steering column when key is shut off/on and the wheel does lock. If I install the CLB now will this take care of the column locking fuel shut-off problem? I've got a Mn6.

You won't hear the Bzzzzzzt sound of the latch mechanism after CLB install (because the latch is no longer moving).
My local Chevy dealer is still honoring the latest recall. The service manager was surprised when I told him about the reported Feb 28 expiration date...he said that safety recalls can be superceded but don't "expire"
It's NOT a dead horse if you are new to owning a C5 and need to know an answer to something. Don't open or respond to a thread if your going to be a drive-by smarta##. Put a hold on your 19 posts, sit back and read the forum for a while and watch all the helpful people show you how it's done
