You do not have Competitive Driving on your car. Competitive Driving mode consists of Traction Control off and Active Handling on. The first generation of Active Handling was available, as an option, from late 1998 through 2000. Second generation Active Handling was made standard from 2001 through 2004 on C5s.

The 1997 Corvette is not equipped with Competition mode. Competition mode is made possible by combining actions from the traction control system and the active handling system. Active Handling was not available until 1998.

Hi Paul!!!
Paul knows of what he is speaking. He is absolutely correct. Actually Competitive Driving disables traction control and leaves Active Handling engaged. You need to have RPO JL4 which didn't become available until mid year 1998.
Generation 2 A/H was programmed to be less intrusive and you would be able to change the state of the systems while the vehicle was moving, where with Generation 1, you had to stop the vehicle.

Make sure you're well versed in how to handle the car should you decide to turn off the active handling and/or traction control.
Take some professional driving courses where damage/injury may be reduced should you find out computers react quicker than you do.
There's way to many stories about "I wrecked my new car..." by new owners who think they're expert drivers because they own a performance car...

I have a 99 and comp mode is pretty cool! but the whole hold down the button for 5 seconds while stopped is teh suck. any chance that a 2001+ BCM would be a direct swap for a 99 (after programming of course) and allow me to go into comp mode while rolling?

The BCM may not be where the issue is. The switch provides an input to the BCM and the BCM sends a message to the EBCM requesting a mode change. When they updated the system in 2001 they may have just changed the programming in the EBCM to ignore the wheel speed signals when the mode change is made.
Agreed---
It takes 5-7 seconds to activate in a 2000 which seems like forever when your really want it!! And of course you still have to be at a FULL stop otherwise it will not engage.
Its easier to just turn it all off and be carefull--- how often do you need full activication of traction control anyways??

Actually, with Generation I Active Handling, you must be stopped only at the moment of engagement following the five seconds. In other words. you can be rolling up to a stop sign, push and hold the button, and Competitive Driving will engage IF you are stopped by the five second mark.
