Default Door inside a door

After a year and a half of ownership I just noticed that there is a door that covers the ash tray. This is of course under the door that covers the lighter and ash tray (under the climate controls). It does not stay closed though when the front door is opened. What good is it then? Is is supposed to close?

If you pull the ash tray out, you'll notice it's spring loaded. You could disable it...or you could eliminate it.
Many use that cubby hole for garage door opener, to hide their high tech widget, switch panel for NOS, hide out for their GLOCK...

GM had 36,289 ashtrays left over from the Cavalier line.

They figured they might as well save a few $$ and use them up.

The only thing it's good for is the "finger" mod to the cup holder.

when the ashtray is full you can hold it's door closed while removing to empty. keeps ashes from scattering throughout the interior

Its to keep the smells enclosed

I took mine out when I fitted my heated seat switches. It serves no purpose at all if you don't plan to smoke in the car.

We have ashtrays?

I put a pen between the two doors --- the springloaded door keeps it in place

I think that second door is to put out any smoldering ashes to keep your Vette from burning up from careless smokers. No smoking in my vette.
