I'm planning on changing the coolant on my 99 coupe, is there any special things I need to do? I know on some GM vehicles there are plugs you need to remove to remove air pockets from the system. Is this the situation with a Corvette?
Thanks,
Jim
btw, great site. I fixed my passenger window by following instructions from this forum. Saved hundreds I'm sure. It's amazing the repairs you can do with a screwdriver and a hammer.
Your stock drain plug is on the passenger side of the radiator, it takes a 1/4 inch square drive socket to open. Open it only 90 degrees , then pull it out. If you open more, you will shear the pin(s) and need another one ($5 at NAPA, aftermarket ones can be turned by hand).
Let car level to drain most coolant out.
You don't have to flush IF old coolant is clean.
Use distilled water, 50/50 mix.
fill three times, reving engine from idle to 3,000 rpms until reaching 210 F.
First reply has it correct... no real need to flush, I drain and re-fill every couple of years. After you drain fill up with 50/50 distilled water and dex-cool. Next, start the car with the reservoir cap off and let it idle for 1 minute. Then put the cap back on and cycle the car from idle to 3000 rpms 30 seconds at each until your coolant reaches 200 (to get the t-stat to open). Then turn the car off and slowly remove the reservoir cap. Then start the car and let it idle again for one minute. Repeat this 3x... this is how the GM service manual tells you to do it. Ive done it 4x w/o issue.
