Heres another question I ponder, Camaro Vs. Mustang, RoadRunner Vs. Chevelle, but Corvette was always to exotic and more expensive than the other 'cars'. IMO it did not 'grow up' with an arch enemy because it was too unique and select.

Question, what is Corvettes classic 'enemy' or does it even have one?

Porche ?, who raced Porche in the 60`s, James Dean ? no, uuhhhh, ummmmm,see somehow I think it stays seperate in a way to this day. Is it missing that certain area of linage ? No classic 'arch enemy'?

I know Mustangs like to pick on us but by tradition that is Camaros kill.

Is it 'devoid' in this one area ?

??? Dodge Viper, would be the only one I could think of...porshes, mustangs, camaros do not compete directly with the corvette...(Whether their owners believe it or not!)

Over the years Porsche has always been one of Corvette's competitors.All the major auto mags have done so many comparison's anytime one goes through a change.The Viper is considered as well but,that's recent history.

Me too ! My very first ride in a Hot Rod, I was 13 years old, a guy named Gary had a brand new 1970 RR 440 6 pack 4:11 posi Red with black landeu (sp) top and trim. You could pay him a few bucks for a ride.

We went off base, (Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Md,) so I did. He stopped on the empty hiway, pushed a button, up came the air snorkel, with teeth even, he revved up, dumped the clutch.......

I been jacked in the head ever since ! I recently saw Beckham (sp) Auctions sell a green 1970 RR Hemi, pistol grip at 108,000 or so. If I had the resources (ha-ha) I fantasized my bid at 138,000, maybe I would have won. Yeah and then I woke up to Jacklyn Smith standing over me, pppfffttt, wa-wa.

RoadRunner,, IMO the greatest name ever for a Detroit Hot Rod.

Yes I know initially it was a Vette vs. Tbird competition but even then it was kinda apples and oranges. The 55,56,57 Tbirds are true classics but even then as a high style cruiser.

2004 Customized Ford Tbird, Merlot with light beigh (sp) interior (hey just like my 50th AE Vette, must be a color combo thing), I took it from 280 factory HP to about 320 HP. This was my first and LAST Ford of my life I do believe, Ford takes you half way there in my opinion and talk about engineering in dealer required service intervals, sheeeesh.

To Tbirds credit however, they hold the record for most M.T. Car of the Year awards at 4 times. 1958, 87, 89 and 02. The Tbird will be back.

So as I thought maybe, no clear cut classic arch rival to Vette ?

I was watching the Speed Channel the other day and the program that was about to come on was 101 cars you must drive. I probably would not have watched it, but they showed the cars that were featured in that episode and that night they had the Corvette as one of the cars. It turned out to be Jay Leno's C6RS. When it came to that part, that was the first thing he said. The Corvette is always compared to the Porsche when it is evaluated and it is always a Corvette and Porsche that the beat on during that testing.
You hardly ever see the Corvette compared other brands, because it is considered a sports car, not a pony car or muscle car, although it will run with either, handle better and supply a lot more comfort.

Its obvious you weren't around in the 60s and early 70s. The Jaguar XKE was always compared to a Corvette, just as much as a 911.

 

according to "All corvettes are red" the C5 was designed as a counter point to the Supra, 300zx, dodge stealth and Mitsubishi 3000gt. The Porsche raised their MSRP and became way out of the price demographic ("and their sales numbers showed it").

now is a different story altogether.. I would venture GT-R, Viper, Cobra, Boxter S and 911..

I think the person who said, "it was considered a Sports car", meaning that was the catagory with no domestic linage (history), was exactly why it has no well defined nemisis or arch enemy, per se. Maybe thats the best answer to the meaning of my question ?

Ive always thought of Corvettes competition to be Viper, Ferrari (Modena, F430), Lamborghini Gallardo, and Porsche Carrera. Although with the new ZR1, I believe its competition is higher like Ferrari Enzo, Carrera GT, etc.
