Heres another question I ponder, Camaro Vs. Mustang, RoadRunner Vs. Chevelle, but Corvette was always to exotic and more expensive than the other 'cars'. IMO it did not 'grow up' with an arch enemy because it was too unique and select.
Question, what is Corvettes classic 'enemy' or does it even have one?
Porche ?, who raced Porche in the 60`s, James Dean ? no, uuhhhh, ummmmm, see somehow I think it stays seperate in a way to this day. Is it missing that certain area of linage ? No classic 'arch enemy'?
I know Mustangs like to pick on us but by tradition that is Camaros kill.
Is it 'devoid' in this one area ?
Huh?
THUNDERBIRD, I know you be playin wit me now !
I don't think the Corvette is an exotic. Ferraris and Lambos are exotics.
Yup....my ex-wives (TWO of them) put the KABOSH on a lot of things for me for a very long time, Corvettes included......These were two women that HATED each other while I was married to the 2nd one....Divorced the 2nd one in 1989 and they became BEST of friends...Talk about nemesis...Hell hath NO FURY to like two ex-wives that become best friends!!! ...I lived like a frickin' coyote for many years getting back on my feet, working every available hour of OT, extra-duty, side jobs, etc......It took damn near 20 years to recover and get to where I am now.....but I can honestly say it was worth the wait!!!....and BOY, do they hate it

It doesn't matter what used to be. All of those old cars are junk compared to the C5 and C6. Can never figure out why people pay so much for those old muscle cars at the auctions. Why spend so much on an old car you can't drive when you can spend less than half on something that can run rings around it without even breathing hard.
As for its present competition it is Porsche, BMW, Ferrari and maybe Viper (not a lot of them around, I see more Ferrari's than Vipers).
My thoughts exactly. The challengers come and go, but the Corvette remains the ultimate performance-car survivor. It's always been pretty much what it is today -- accessible to those that work a little harder than most, and able to hold its head high among all comers.
I'm going to go on a limb here and say the only "sport" ride that compares with a Corvette would be the Harley Davidson. Harley has embedded itself with a true American muscle reputation that closely reminds me of the Corvette. Corvette, like Harley, has that true American distinction of sporty, classy, and most importantly fun to drive. They are both one of a kind in class with each manufacturers in each industry competing against the other in the never ending battle for performance and style. Both manufacturers have seen a TON of history and have been through a lot of tough times but have seemed to strive through each downfall. Corvette, like Harley, seems to have a sort of "family" that is embedded in ones character for respect of fellow owners. My respect goes out to both manufacturers for truly making a world renowned and highly respected machine. Just my .02.
One of my buds has an '05 non-turbo Porsche 911 C4S (awd). While my modded coupe (with Z06 sway bars) would edge him out in the straights, there is no way it could keep up in the twisties without major suspension mods. If only I had some more $$$...

I agree with your take other than the obvious, 2 wheel vs. 4 wheel, but the mystique and unique heritage and loyality of fans, does compare best with H.D.,many many parallels, good take, IMO
I agree with the person that said they didnt think of corvettes as exotics, Corvettes are not exotic cars. Aston,Ferrari,Koenisegg, Lamborghini, Saleen S7,select Porsches' are what come to mind when I think exotic. American muscle=Corvette. Viper would be a competitor here recently (C5 & up)
My opinion would be the Porsche as the only nemesis still around. Nothing else, with the long history of the corvette, still perceives a threat to it. Some specialty mustangs like the GT 500 but overall everything else has fallen to the wayside. I love the Porsche and to do what they do with a 6cyl is incredible. They give up cubic inches and hp, yet still manage to always come out on top. Love my vette but props to the Germans for making a great car.
IMHO the porsche sticks with the small motor for weight issues.. its the crutch of the basic car architecture (being tail heavy). I would give props to them for keeping with tradition and making a good bandaid to satisfy the purists and still turn good performance numbers..
I think this same argument applies to our cars (front engine). although they have hit nearly a 50-50 balance they keep the engine in front (in lieu of a mid design) for the heritage.
My congratulations and appreciation goes to the folks in the Corvette design studio and platform engineers who have DONE so much for so little coin $$$..
Imagine what a $250,000 Corvette could do.. (a la Porsche GT2) or a $480,000 Corvette (a la Carrera GT) or a 1.4 million corvette (Veyron). I see the ZR1 and the latest modifications to the C6 platform as a pretty good step in the right direction.. I hope they keep the interior and performance improvements coming at this rapid pace..
.. I'm saving my pennies for my 1st brand new Z06!!! Hopefully this dec!!
On a side note I really want a Roadrunner...anybody want to donate?
A '68 with a 383 was my first car with real power. The first owner built it up a little and at 19 it was way to fun. Stopped at over 100 mph racing a mustang down Stevens Creek Boulevard in San Jose. You know back when to cruz was the thing to do. I pulled over as soon as the cop swung around behind us. Thank god the cop had a roadrunner that was stock and wanted to talk. Ended up with a ticket a couple miles under the point where they would have taken my license. It was probably my favorite out of 3 or 4 muscle cars I’ve had over the years.
Me too ! My very first ride in a Hot Rod, I was 13 years old, a guy named Gary had a brand new 1970 RR 440 6 pack 4:11 posi Red with black landeu (sp) top and trim. You could pay him a few bucks for a ride.
We went off base, (Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Md,) so I did. He stopped on the empty hiway, pushed a button, up came the air snorkel, with teeth even, he revved up, dumped the clutch.......
I been jacked in the head ever since ! I recently saw Beckham (sp) Auctions sell a green 1970 RR Hemi, pistol grip at 108,000 or so. If I had the resources (ha-ha) I fantasized my bid at 138,000, maybe I would have won. Yeah and then I woke up to Jacklyn Smith standing over me, pppfffttt, wa-wa.
RoadRunner,, IMO the greatest name ever for a Detroit Hot Rod.
Yes I know initially it was a Vette vs. Tbird competition but even then it was kinda apples and oranges. The 55,56,57 Tbirds are true classics but even then as a high style cruiser.
2004 Customized Ford Tbird, Merlot with light beigh (sp) interior (hey just like my 50th AE Vette, must be a color combo thing), I took it from 280 factory HP to about 320 HP. This was my first and LAST Ford of my life I do believe, Ford takes you half way there in my opinion and talk about engineering in dealer required service intervals, sheeeesh.
To Tbirds credit however, they hold the record for most M.T. Car of the Year awards at 4 times. 1958, 87, 89 and 02. The Tbird will be back.
So as I thought maybe, no clear cut classic arch rival to Vette ?
Hmmmmmmm, to unique or ?
Seems as if there is a lot of strong sentemint (sp) for the great Mopar,
RoadRunner. To bad there can`t be a modern retro version. 1969
Motor Trends Car of the Year even, and what a year to choose from.
Take care,
