Ok we have all seen those funny looking little cars running around lately because of the high price of gas, and yesterday I had the pleasure of being behind one.
So here we are on a side street cruising along and we both turn off to get on the freeway, now being a Vette owner and Im sure like most of you, getting on a freeway is my favorite part of the trip home!! This stupid little car infront of me is taking like an hour to get up to 30, so I hit the gas hard go around him and bring it up to the legal speed limet here which is 75 mph I passed him going probably 45 by the time I hit 75 he was so far behind me I could barely see him, how safe is a car that takes that long to get up to the speed limet? Im sure Im not like everyone but damit i want to enjoy my ride home and its not just about how many pennies I can put in my pocket but how much i can enjoy the ones I earned that day....
My little rant for the day we now return you to your regularly programmed entertainment.............
Having driven Corvettes since 1998, I too feel your pain, but one time when it was in the dealer for repair, I ended up renting a 4-cylinder car. I remembered what its like to try to get on the freeway with only 4 pistons out there. Give them a break and know that they are pushing on the gas as far as it will go but they are probably using one tenth the gas you did when you blasted past them. Just be understanding as they probably wish they could trade cars with you!
that reminds me of Sears driving school We had little Honda civics. The first time i got on the freeway went something like this:
Instructor: Take the next on ramp
Me: okay *signals and enters on ramp*
Instructor: Give it more gas
Me: That's all it has
Instructor: But you're slowing down
Me: I know, yall should get Camaros like the other driving school.
And who is the North American importer for the Smart Car? It's someone who has considerable history with Chevy, racing, and performance products: Roger Penske
Well, there's a use and a place for lots of different cars on our roads. I actually like the idea of a 45mpg runabout, but I sure wouldn't take one on the highway. Likewise, I wouldn't use a vette to pull a trailer or go off-roading, nor would I want a Suburban for commuting. It's all about having the vehicle or vehicles that work best with your situation.
PS -- Chevy! Bring us that cool little Beat subcompact! (the one little green car behind the alleged C7 prototype). I'd buy one in a heartbeat (no pun intended!)
They aren't fast, but I bet they're a breeze to park! What I don't get is the price. They are so darn expensive. You would think a little car like that would cost $9k, max.
Even worse the 15 seconds to 60 is the upgraded motor housing a whopping 61 hp!! The 50 hp is "slightly" slower!!!
If I were going for a milage car Id get a Mini thier cool, hold four people have decent performance (37mpg hwy 8.5 second to 60) compared to a 41 mpg smart car with its dismal even dangerous struggle to sixy at 15++ seconds..
Luckily for me I only work 10 miles from my home and drive the Vette a few days out of the week so milage isnt a huge concern, its all about smiles per gallon to me!!
My wife and I had one of these follow us fom San Antonio to Dallas. I had the cruse set on 70 mph. This guy was stuck to my tail like I was towing him. I didn't mind, I thought he needed all the help he could get. Now he probably tells all his friends that he can hang with a vette on the highway. Maybe I'll check out the smart car forum to see if there is a "My Smart car beat a vette" thread.
