fergy flyer -- I also live out West and know full well the great distances between towns and the lack of cell phone service.
What I did was buy another set of rear wheels and new Supercar tires, which I feel are much better than the D3's besides being wider per given size.
I crammed the 18x10.5 wheel with 295 tire about 75 per cent into the trunk , from behind the seats. I bought 2 jacks. If I get a rear flat I do not think I will be able to fit a jack and puck under the rear lifting point so I will lift it on the front lifting point until I can fit the other jack under the rear lifting point.
I am sure I could have fit the smaller front tire/wheel into the trunk from behind the seats but did not want to burn up the rear diff. using a shorter diameter tire with the 295 tire. I might have been able to let the air out of the 295 tire and then get it into the trunk fully and use my inflater to fill it.
I really like the peace of mind in having a spare even if it does add weight. After all, the car will not be that fast with a flat.
One other option is to put the smaller fron wheel/tire fully in the trunk and if I get a rear flat put it on and then take off a front tire and put it on the rear and the rear tire up front.
