Default Spare Tire

I found a great deal on an 04 Z06/Z16. I've pretty much decided to buy it to replace my C6. I like to take long trips and one of the issues that got me to replace my 02 Z06 with my C6 was the spare tire part.

I've heard that the GTO spare works for the Z06. I tried to find a thread that would confirm that, but the only one that I could find was too old to let me read it. Does anybody know if the GTO spare works or if there is any other spare that works ???

I'm not looking for a plug kit or the latest Slime that seals the tire, but a real spare. When your on hwy 50 in Nevada and your 70 miles from the next small town and your cell phone doesn't work and your tire is sliced, there isn't a replacement for a real spare tire.

Interested to hear about this also. If it does work, would you just throw it in the back when you were going on a trip?

Hi fergy,

When we took our Lake Superior scenic tour last year, mqqn took along the GTO spare in case one of us had a flat. You could PM him for further details. Also, you could always put the C6 (or C6 Z06) runflats on the Z16 (although of course you would need new wheels too). HTH.

Whenever these spare tire threads come up I always wonder if the posting person has given any thought as to where you are putting the flat tire you removed, especially since a wheel/tire combo isn't fitting in an empty Z trunk. Plus, you are also going to have to carry a jack if you are thinking of changing it if you are stranded. A flat repair kit, a AAA card and a cell phone is going to be much more productive. I know when my wife and I travel, you ain't getting a bicycle tire in the trunk. I guess you're thinking of roof racks.

You've obviously never traveled out west. It can be 70 miles to the next town and you will go for periods of 30 or 40 miles with no cell phone service. AAA on HWY 50 in Nevada could be 120 miles away and your response time would be 4 hours.

I'll figure some way to get her in the car with the tire, but if I'm stranded, she's going to be more miserable than if she's squeezed in around a tire.

I know for a fact that the bolt pattern is the same, I'm wondering about clearance for the brakes.

I completely forgot about that as an option. Thanks.

The gto spare is skinny at about 4" wide. The inside diameter circle on the spare will most likely need about 1/8" ground out.

plenty of guys are running GTO spares on the front for front runners at the drag strip, if you don't have larger than stock brakes they should be fine

If you have to use that GTO spare on the back and the OD is significantly different than the OD of the tire/wheel you're removing, you'll in all likelihood damage your differential.
People seldom think of that...

Not sure about this but I read an article about the C6RS and they couldn't turn off traction control without getting a reading from all of the tire pressure sensors. I would think doing something like this would completely throw off TC/Active handeling when trying to drive it with a small spare. Not sure, haven't done any reading on this.

Nevermind, just remembered my 98 has a TPS monitoring system, Z does not. LOL!!!

Again thanks.

More than likely I'll end up being able to fix the flat on the side and never use the spare, but I want an option if the tire completely fails and I'm a good distance from a town on a trip out west. Living in AZ you know how far it can be between towns.

A friend just came up with the perfect solution. It's so simple it's kinda like a DUH.

Buy a set of C5 wheels and some runflats. I wanted to get the tire pressure sensors installed anyhow. For 95% of my time driving I'll use the Z06 wheels with the TPS. When I decide to take a trip I'll switch to the regular C5 wheels and runflats.

As for the noise from the runflats, I'll have the back loaded with luggage and that will deaden most of the sound. I'm already planning on using a bit of dynomat to quiet it a bit anyhow.

Thanks everyone for the responses.

Should have the car by this time tommorrow.

27,500 for the Z16 with 33,000 miles. Not the best deal, not the worst. One owner car with a clean carfax and a low number.

Actually I have lived out west, lived in Phoenix many years ago. Also, I'm very familiar with the "No Services Next 100 Miles" signs, having driven cross country several times. I still think trying to utilize a spare tire is not being very practical, also considering the the size differences of the tires.

The GTO spare is 25" diameter... the ZO-6 front tire is 25.4" and the rear is 26.1"

That makes it at most 1/2" shorter... you be the judge...

Yes you will need to ream out the hub about 1/8" to fit over the Corvette hub and it does clear the brakes front and back.
