Default Taking a Z for a test drive

Well... I've been on the forum for over 4 years, and now am finally ready to pull the trigger....

Taking an 02 Z06 MY... 53K miles... very clean car and very little wear for the miles.

Clean carfax...

Going to take it on a test drive in about an hour. I've been looking for one with a few miles on it since I plan to use it mainly for Autcross and car cruises / road trips. Didn't want a super low mile car and then feel guilty about cone marks and such..

They're asking 24,900 ( down from 28K back in June ).

Wish me luck

I'll post tonight with my thoughts on how it drives.

Best of luck! Scare the salesman to death with a good launch or two!

LOL. I made the salesman nervous on my test drive and he actually did that motion with his leg like he was looking for a brake. I told him "No brake over there bud." Good luck on the car!

Ok, so I'm back home...

the car overall is in really nice shape outside and about a 8 in the inside... the drivers seatback is messed up a bit, in that when you lean back into it the left side gives more than the right... while it's not a big deal, it's annoying. I know it can be fixed.

The powertrain on the car was great.... except for one thing...

When I'd be merging onto the highway, or accelerating on the main road, going from 2nd to 3rd the car didn't want to go into 3rd. If you were taking it easy power-wise and not loading the car up, it would shirt ok.

He said "I noticed that today for the 1st time and thought I just missed... so, it's not you. I'll have to have my guys look at that in the AM"

So, that worried me. I was thinking a synchro could be going bad or worse... or that maybe the shifter's rod for that gate is worn or something ( can those be adjusted?? ) and is fighting 3rd.

All the other gears were flawless.

So, I came away a bit disappointed, but I'm in no hurry for one. Just need to get it by November/December to get it ready for March's autocross season.

If you MN6 guys have any insight, I'd love to hear it.

BTW.. that was the 1st time I ever drove a Z06...WOW that was fun...

Was there any gear grinding on the 2-3 shift, or was it just hard to get into 3rd? Did you notice the clutch pedal hanging close to the floor on the "spirited" shifts? Don't really have enough info from you yet to make a guess.

Hey there, I wish you luck in the hunt for the Z06. I have a blast with my 04 Z at autocrossing. I ended up joining the NCCC to finish this year just to get some practice. I attend a race just about every weekend so far. I might join the SCCA next year I'll have to wait and see. Well don't rush anything I know you can find a great car with the right miles and the right price. Good luck.

Well, I guess it could be classed as a grind.... it reminded me of you not getting the clutch in and just barely hitting the gate entry and you get that "chick" sound...

No, the pedal feel was just fine, with nice takeup and no hanging. The 2-3 shift was tough on acceleration, but when you let off ( and re-engaged the clutch ) it went in just fine.

Sorry... this is the 1st time I've had to explain something like this.

So whats the deal on the 2nd to 3rd issue ? Are they fixing it or waiting on the sale first ?

My uneducated guess is a worn syncro which may mean the former owner was power shifting 3rd gear a bunch of times..( a lot)

Whats the clutch fluid look like ? Maybe have them change that first, thats the easiest, the fastest, and should be done anyway.

good luck

They are looking into it today to see what the issue is, and then letting me know what the deal is.

That was my first guess ( synchro ). I forgot to check the clutch fluid to be honest. I checked the other fluids I could, but forgot they're separate on the Vettes... my car shares the clutch & Brake res..

We'll see what they say.

I planned on changing those fliuds after purchase also... even if they looked good.

Update:

Dealer emailed today and said they are taking it to an outside shop that they trust to look it over and see what the deal is, and when it's fixed, it will come back to them and they'll let me know what was wrong.

This email came shortly adter I said I was going to keep looking because I wasn't comfortable with the issues it was having that were FOUND, let alone what was underneath...

So did it shift hard every time from 2nd to 3rd? You made it sound only when the tranny was "loaded" which to me seems like the clutch wasn't fully depressed. It could be something simple like the clutch needs bleeding or the tranny oil needs changing. See what they come back with and go from there. IMO, the price isn't bad if the car is in decent shape.

I had the clutch to the floor... after the 1st time It happened I thought I was doing something wrong, so I paid close attention to what I was doing. When I was just driving "normal" it never had any problems shifting in any gear, but when you were getting on it, like merging onto the highway, it wouldn't go in at all unless I let the clutch out... put it back in and eased it back into gear.

I'm hoping it was something simple and that maybe something can get worked out.
I'll keep things updated here.

What percent throttle would you say you were using to merge? 75% or more like 30-40%?

Just curious- I'd hold out to see how they (the dealer) handles it but would not be happy with a "clutch adjustment".

I'd say I was at about 40% or more... never drove one before so I wasn't going to overdue it and kill myself...lol

Yes... when it's fixed, They're showing me the repair order and such...
