Default Service Column Lock - Not the usual

So I was up in Mass this weekend and on Saturday after I started up my car and proceeded to back out of the driveway, half way up the driveway while I was driving and while the car was on, the steering wheel locked. I saw on the DIC "Service Column Lock". I shut off the car and was waiting for the dreaded message of Wait 10 secs and pull key.

However, I did not get that message. The car was brought into the dealer for this fix a few years ago so I have no idea why it even popped up in the first place. I restarted the car and it has been fine. The problem is now every time I start up my car I get the message on the DIC and have to hit reset so that it clears the message and my DIC shows the odometer again.

Is there any way to get this message off permanently? I thought reset does it, but like I said it keeps coming up each time.

Thanks,

Mike

I've had similar issues....I removed fuse # 25 under foot rest panel-passenger side..waited about a minute and put fuse back. Seemed to work for me for a while.... (fingers crossed)

If the column LOCKED WHILE DRIVING the car, I would disconnect the column lock completely and plug in the CLB. The CLB “replaces” the column lock to trick the computer into thinking the column lock motor is still connected. That is the CLB’s only function and an important function it is!

Maybe by installing the CLB the message will go away.

Do NOT return to the dealer for this fix - best to do it yourself. Possibly your car does not have the fuel shut-off programmed into the computer. If not it is best to not have that programming done.

Others with more knowledge can help you further.

Dont mess around with it put the CLB in now!! you wont regret it. It only takes about an hour to do, a whole lot less time then getting towed in.

This is not a common scenario. If the column locked after the car was started that's a serious issue although quite rare. You don't say if you have a MN6 but I'm assuming you do since you were already at the dealer once before and they didn't complete disable it.

What likely happened is the lock didn't fully retract when you put the key in and turned it to ON and was just barely touching the locking plate. What the dealer did for you in the past did not disable it (again assuming you have an MN6).

You need to find out what they did, reverse it if they added a new relay near the BCM, and install the CLB. That's the ONLY way to prevent the column lock issue. I installed mine within days of getting my car 8 years ago and never let GM touch it. Read the details on the column lock sticky if you need more info.

Clb all the way.. You have to do it now, or else it'll come back to bite you.

take it back to the dealer for the final recall which removes the column lock plate... or

add the CLB (like everyone else suggests!)
