I need to replace my instrument cluster on my 2000 HUD C5 as I have developed a buzz from the internall speaker inside the cluster. the buzz is not a vibration but intermittent power that seems to be getting to the speaker causing the speaker to sound like and old line modem.
My local dealer says $800-$1000 to replace the instrument cluster but I was wondering if this is something that I can do myself and possibly with a used unit off ebay so I have a few questions...
1.Anyone replaced an instrument cluster before? is this difficult?
2.What about the original milage that's on my car now?
3.If a used unit is used Can it be changed to reflect the correct milage that is on my car now?
4. If you feel I should use a new cluster, Why?
What other problem does anyone see with trying to swap out my instrument cluster with a used one from ebay
I'm trying to save some dollars so any advice would be of great help!
Easy job..plenty of used clusters available for $100-$300...you can use any cluster..just keep you current HUD module..also I think the mileage module just can be replaced as complete item.. If not just jot down your current mileage and the mileage on the new cluste and add or subtract. BTY...WHAT buzz from what cluster speaker..?????? Are you sure the cluster is the problem...at any rate avoid any dealer repair.

Here is a very good link for removal & replacement of the cluster. It's actually for putting in the bezels on the speedo, but it's the same proceedure. I used these instructions several months ago on my wife's 01 when I modded the interior. http://www.vetteessentials.com/instr...zel_howto.html

The buzz is from a speaker that is mounted on the back of the cluster, look at a pic of one and you will see it. I believe it has to do with the turn signal and key buzzer.
The milage is of concern I am wanting my correct milage to be displayed otherwise it's not worth going the cheap route...I would think not being able to display the correct milage would hurt re-sale/value of my car,...so does anyone know how this can be done without having to put brand new one in? I was thinking that it was just picking up the information from a differant source and simply displaying it on the DIC but maybe I'm wrong?
