Default Question on long tube headers

I have a 01 Z06 with the Halltech sidewinder, Magnafow exhaust with xpipe and the B&M ripper. My best time was a 12.228 at 110.55 with a 60ft of 1.768. My question is how much of an improvement can I can I expect by installing long tube headers with the set up I currentely have? Thanks VNVETT Augusta Ga.

VNVETT-

Typically you can expect 15-20 hp gain with the LT's. That SHOULD equate to around .2's in the quarter mile.

VNVETT, You're already running great ETs with that 01 and your 60' is terrific. Adding the LT header will not improve your car's performance in the first 330', since you are already traction limited and the additional power will make that worse.

Where you would see an improvement is in the increment 330'-1320' where the tires are already hooked and you've only got the shifts to 3d and 4th to get past. Question is how much improvement would you likely see. I'd suggest calculating that incremental time. Mine tends to fall in the range of 7.05 (ET around 12.15) down to 6.93 (ET around 12.00 or less). I would expect LT headers to trim about 0.1 from the 330-1320, maybe a little more in exceptional air.

BTW, what tires were you running. A 12.228 with a 110.55 is indicative of tires other than F1SCs.

Excellent ET but your MPH seems low to me...I agree with Ranger, the gain is in the 3000+ rpm range..But you get rid of 27 lbs, better sound, and they look great to me!! :cool:

Thanks Ranger and everyone else for their help, You too Jamie. You are right about the tires. That night I borrowed a set of 17 inch wheels with BFG drag radials from a friend of mine. They talked me into it after he made a couple of passes. I still don't have heating the tires up down pat but I am going to try it again next week.. The best I have done with the stock tires was a 12.7 at 108. I don't know a lot about racing technique but I always thought my speed should be higher. Thanks again. VNVETT

Not to change the subject Jamie but let me know how you like the package and tell your club members. VNVETT

VNVETT, The tires make sense. Your 60' on that run indicates that your heating routine is working pretty well. I too am new to the BFG DR; just 16 runs on them. 12 were done without proper heating but since I learned to heat them correctly, my last four 60' were 1.82, 1.82, 1.79, and 1.70. I'm hoping to drive that down some with more practice. Mine are mounted on 12" wide wheels.

Drop me an email with a phone number if you'd like some suggestions on the trap speed issue.

Ranger - in your case .... and I guess, anyone else for that matter - how long are you lighting them BFG's up and what was your tire pressure, again :confused:

Z06Bliss,

I thinks each tire type has its own preferred method of heating. ET Streets, Nittos and BFG are all different.

++++++++++++++++++++
With the BFGs and no line-lock
++++++++++++++++++++

Enter COMPETITIVE DRIVING mode.

Back into the water box; spin the rears just enough to make one revolution.

Pull forward out of the water.

Engage 2d gear, drop the clutch and spin the tires to about 5000 rpm.

When the tires grab again and the car roars forward, the tires are properly heated.

No need to count seconds or to produce billowing clouds of smoke.

I've been running 18-19 psi so far. Need to do some more experimentation.

And finally, I don't think a line lock is necessary.

Ranger,

Why do the burnout in 2nd gear?

2d is used to make tires spin faster (than in 1st) and therefore heat faster. I asked the same question when the technique was described to me.
