Although the examples we've seen above don't look too good... I think the only type of side exhaust that might look halfway decent on a C5 (excluding the Z06 with the side brake ducts) is the type of side exhaust maybe running the full length of the side with a body color matching shroud over it.
If it were tastefully designed it might look okay.
Personally I prefer the quad pipes exiting the rear.
The guy that used to have the matte black C5 that is now orange in Sweden had side exit exhaust. It looked pretty good to me considering he is constantly at the track. If you search fro "insane swedish" you will probably find some pics.

I have always like side exhaust. Those pictured look like hell. I did build a Fiberglass replica of a Austin Healey 3000 on steroids years ago. It had a small block vette motor in it. I had a fiberglass shop cut holes in the side right behind the fenderwells and had custom headers and 4" exhaust built that run low along the side. It looked mean as hell and sounded wonderful. You might be able to do that and it would look okay but just like the Healey the leg burns really hurt and I still have scars from it.
I think the only smart way to do it would be to remove the fuel tanks and have the exhaust exit before the rear tires like the black vette. Then figure out where you are going to put a gas tank(s)...
