E-bay has gone severely down hill over the last several years. I used to buy things on there regularly, now I only buy something once or twice a year. On new items, you can often find just as good a deal elsewhere on the internet. I stopped buying used stuff because it started to get really crappy, heavy sellers were slow to respond, shipping costs got crazy, and sellers wouldn't leave feedback until they saw what you had left for them.
PayPal is even worse. The recourse for a bad or missing item is non-existent. I bought a battery for my laptop on e-bay and paid with PayPal. The battery never came, the seller was slow responding to my e-mails, wouldn't provide a tracking number, and was uncooperative. PayPal did nothing for me. That was the last time I ever used them.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I have been using ebay for 8 years and never have had a problem. I've also been with paypal for about 7 yrs and no problems either. Must be the luck of the draw.

But with all the stories I keep hearing about them both, I know it will just be a matter of time before I get the shaft too.

I Think you won't have problems, but if you got a damn keylogger you will have.-
i had a problem with some email accounts last year, all because of a terrible virus, and a keylogger.-

You won't believe me,it was a virus that opened a "door" and 5 more virus entered !
all in one second !!!!!!
scary as hell !

we've done 1000's of business transactions with PayPal, not one single issue.

Some of the largest companies on the INTERNET use PayPal. It is as secure a transaction you can make online...

As others have said, you have a local problem...

I'd be careful about logging into your bank accounts from that computer...

Peace
Chip

even though paypal is owned by ebay, they're governed by a completely different set of federal regulations since they function both as a bank and credit lender.

Ebay (like any other big company) doens't have to have good service because they have so many customers. losing 1, 10 or even 100 customers won't hurt them at all compared to the cost it would take to correct the problems.

I don't use either as much as I used to. But they were better to deal with when the whole operation was a bit smaller. I remember a few years ago someone hacked my accounts and bought a motorcycle. Somehow someone with paypal alerted me saying they didn't think it was me and offered to remove it from paypal and ebay. They did and I never saw it on my accounts again. Now I think they wouldn't bother with this and just let you fend for your self. If there is something I want on ebay I will still use them but I change passwords frequently. I don't keep any funds in paypal and check my accounts often.

Thanks for sharing your info and best of luck with your future ventures.

Your computer was compromised.

It's not ebays fault or paypals.

I'd format your entire drive and reload your machine.

I'd run hijack this and some other tools against your pc plus I'd start here to see if anything gets picked up on your PC - its free

My wife, who is ever watchful of my internet habits has enough anti-hacking, anti-virus and anti-venom software on this computer to prevent such an occurrence. I will discuss your suggestions with her.

On the other hand my main complaint is the way eBay has their members communicate with their support staff. The fact of the matter is, eBay is so big, they don't care. Well other big companies also found that not caring is a good (albeit sometimes slow) way to become smaller and less profitable.

Again I only posted this to share what might happen to eBay and PayPal members. To those who feel it's convenient and will continue to use it, that's fine with me. It is convenient, when nothing goes wrong.
Always use a independent Credit Card for payment and if things do not work call the CC and shut the door on the transaction. Paypal wants you to use their resolution steps but I do not let any bull spread further than it needs to. The CC company will reverse the transaction and that removes the charge from your account. You can not believe how fast the other end reacts to the move. It is like a lighting bolt strikes.

I see every day where people say they have been hacked. I also see everyday where people tell others to get Norton or McAfee to stop it. What most people Don't know is the hackers go after Norton & McAfee the most because they are sold the most. The bad thing is, these 2 companies are constantly playing catch-up to stop the ever changing viruses, Trojans, ect. They won't tell you how many times their systems has been hacked because they don[t want you to know. Mal ware finders, hijack this, AVG are some programs that don't get hacked because they are not widely known. Also be very, VERY careful of on line virus scans. Some require you to down load an active X program to run. Once you run it, all of you info has been hacked, you will be told that you have numerous viruses & you must buy this program before hey will be removed. Chances are you have nothing wrong with your computer, & you just put a Trojan on your system.
Forums such as Castle cops are for computer geeks to help others with the problems. I highly recommend them.

Yep,

This is the best way to deal with any unauthorized transactions on your CC. Also most fancy Credit cards....gold, platinum etc... have extract consumer protection/warranty built into their package.

Like another poster said, it sounds like your computer is loaded up with spyware, or possibly viruses. There are steps you can take to correct this.

A. Make sure you have updated anti-virus software. If you don't have any anti-virus software, don't worry, you don't have to pay 100 bucks for it. Download AVG Anti-Virus. It is free, and used by millions of people (myself included) and it does a great job of removing viruses.

B. Download Spybot Search & Destroy. Update the definitions, and do a scan. I can almost guarantee you that you have loads of spyware on your computer.

C. Download Ad-Aware. This will clean up any messes left over from the other two. Once again, like always, update your definitions, and do a full system scan.

There is no reason your Ebay or Paypal account should have been hacked, unless there was some sort of Spyware on your computer. Get rid of the spyware, and you will be good to go

I've said it in the thread you made in C4 gen but I'll say it again in here for the C5 folks. NEVER EVER log in to anything following a link in an email. Always open a new page and manually type in the web address of the site you wish to visit. No antivirus of antispyware will protect you from a phishing email.

I have one word for all those windoze users with security problems: Linux!

Try the Ubuntu version. It's free - works great; forget about viruses, malware, spyware, trojan horses etc. and no more blue screen of death.

Some good tips here. I've always used spyware, virus checkers and a firewall but, even so, I had similar problem. Luckily the hacker just used my account for spamming. I started getting aggressive E mails from people and couldn't work out why. Also every time I changed my pw it would be changed again shortly afterwards. Couldn't work out how he kept changing my passwords until I realized that, stupidly, I was using the same pw for my e mail as E Bay. I put that right PDQ. As has been said, quite often we're our own worst enemies. Lesson learned here.

Hope you sort out a solution with E Bay.

You may have one word....but I got two words

Craigs......list

List your stuff.... a person calls you......they come and look at it....if they like it they give you cash and take your item away with them.

Slick as dog S _ _ _ T

amazing how it works.

I will admit, Craigslist needs a better search function. I have to use google and search the item using the terms "craigslist + [item name]

While I agree that linux is nice for some things, don't let it give you a false sense of security though. You are not safe from phishing emails either.

Agreed; common sense and a nose for scams still required.
