Hey guys, I'm fairly new here, and still getting a little info.
I've read that the difference in 01 vs. 02+ cars is that the cam grind is different, the valves were changed, and the exhaust manifolds were changed.
My question is, what does this equate to at the track?
It seems that car and driver trapped 3mph in the 02 car. Thats a lot of MPH for 20hp. Please fill me in. I know both cars are very quick, but that seems like quite a bit. Also, what is the difference on the dyno? Thanks
Mark

Assuming equal drivers...the 01's lose at about two car lengths. But in reality, the better driver will usually win.
check out old posts, there are plenty..the dyno #'s can vary quite a bit...some 01's better than 02-04's and vice versa...i have an 01 and i'm biased...i enjoy all yr z's, and have driven many...most of the time , i see a dif in driver and tires(traction) to always be the real difference....stock for stock, the biggest dif is really the pup cats on the 01..
good luck
twobeers
(2) larger fresh air filter box opening, descreened MAF.
(3) Elimination of pre CAT quick light off 'pup' converters. Advantage : loss of 5 pounds, and loss of pack pressure ( 2 inches of mercury and 5 hp alone)
(4) Redesigned for 2002 M/Y single block Cats
Items 1-4 are together worth 10 hp. Source ; Dave Hill, John Juriga
(4) Closer piston to cylinder wall tolerance ( redesigned piston introduced mid April 2001 M/Y) . Piston ring pack w/ Napier scraper face design and increased ring tension (TSB ID894549). Note : no measureable power loss from ring install.
(5) The 2002 cam shaft has a smaller base circle (19mm) than the '01 LS6 (19.3 mm and most GEN 3 engines are 19.7mm) to get a higher intake lift .550 over the '01 LS6 .525. The exhust lift has small increase but less aggressive. The .550 intake lift results in a 10% increase in flow.
The valve length was increased by .06 MM, thin walled , sodium -potassium filled . Stiffer valve springs. No change in manifolds or heads (at least for the 2002 M/Y).
Slight recalibration in spark and fuel curves by way of the of the PCM.Fuel pressure and injectors are the same.
The cam and valve train are worth 8-10 hp ( according to Jim Hicks) "
The 2002- Gen 3 LS6 begins to pull away after 3800-4000 rpm
On the street performance by a knowledgeable wheel spin driver offered 0-60 at 3.85 sec and 1/4 mile times at 12.45/118 ( according to Hib Halverson )
There ar few other differences ; HUD, better rear shocks as an example.
I have an '01 Z06 that I swapped out for the complete 2002 exhaust ($300), C6 shocks ($200), fresh air box cover and bridge ($40) dyno tune ($400) . You're looking for the best car for the money, don't pass on the right '01.

i'm going with 04 z shocks on my 01-also i had my exhaust manifolds "ported" by my tuner first...worth shorty headers in h.p.gain.
I would guess the seat of the pants difference would be negligible - but I'm probably biased since I have an '01. On a side note, I haven't had any of the oil-related issues that are mentioned here with my '01 so far.
I cant speak for track times or top speeds but strictly from a daily driver stand point I could not tell the difference from an 03 I drove and the 01 I bought. I believe if you were planning to mod the car the differences would be negligible since you are replacing most of what makes them different.
As for me I just drive the thing. Just rolled over 85k miles last week and love it. It is not worth anything now ( tried to sell it locally for 18.5K and zero bites! ) so if I ever do decide to mod it I can go all out without worry of resale value.
I've driven 01 to 02 and later cars back to back. When you are used to the '02 and later cars when you drive an 01 it feels like something is not quite right in the car. Its just feels like it should be revving a bit quicker, and it isn't. Its just the 20HP difference. Its not super dramatic, but when you are suued to one, and go drive the other its there. I really noticed it most in 3rd gear.
It equated to 3 to 4 car lenths (.3 to .4). But, you can remedy all that with a cam change.

I have an 04 personally and if you are used to tracking it or keeping it near the the rev-limiter and you get into a '01 you will notice a slight difference but if you are old or an armour-all guy and just cruise and go to shows you will never know the difference and i wouldnt pass on the right 01 BTW a good driver with an 01 C5Z will take an 08 C6 on the track.
Look for the best deal and don't worry too much about the model year. Minor changes on the intake and exhaust sides of an '01 and you easily make up the difference in HP. Ultimately the best driver wins. Have fun shopping!
For whatever reason, my '01 felt faster than my '03 (at least untill I got the LG longtubes on the 03). However, my '01 used a quart of oil each 1500 miles, my '03 none at 6000 oil changes. My friend just bought a 2000 mile '01 Z06, and he being new to corvettes asked me if it was normal to use a quart in 1600 miles, because his does. I know that is not really a big deal, but I'd rather mine not, but I told him it was in range of normal. (damn perfect car at a great price, no need to make him think otherwise).
