Will the G5-XX work with stock heads an un-flycut pistons? I'm runing a G5-X2 w/ a 114 LSA... it's a 232/240 .595/.608 114 cam. It's fairly large and any larger drivability would suffer. Yes it's all in the tune, but you can't tune out the mechanics of the cam. The cam still has some bucking/surging at lower speeds in parking lots that cannot be tuned out. It idles perfectly and will cruise in 6th at 1200 rpms fine, but navigating parking lots and/or stop/go traffic takes some skill. Once you learn how to do it it's no biggie, but it sure isn't stock. My Fidanza aluminum flywheel doesn't help either... it exacerbates the issues. Pre-cam the flywheel was no issue at all, post cam it made the tuning trickey so that it wouldn't hunt for idle, but Ed Hutchings knocked it out of the park.
The cam was perfect when I was doing HPDEs etc, but now that it's a waxer toy again the power band is a bit higher than I'd like. If I had to do it all over again I'd go with some great heads and focus on mid range torque.
My current setup hauls the mail from 4000-7000 rpms... it's really fast, but from 2000-4000 it's about like stock. You can feel the cam "come on" at 3500 rpms.
