I just changed the oil myself for the very first time. After 2 hr. dumping oil all over the driveway because the wind was blowing the dripping oil away from the pan (at least I had a plastic trash bag on the concrete) trying to get the filter off with a filter wrench that must have been 1/8" in diameter too big, couldn't get the plug off with socket wrench because cross member was in the way, and not really fitting under the front of the car (beer belly?) even though I just bought Rhino ramps at Wal Mart, . . . Maybe $70 would be worth it !!

I was reading a site on how to do it..but it said to buy ramps and drive up on them..Im assuming I only need to ramp the front..which confuses me b/c it also said after you drain the pan..to jack up the rear 8 inches above the front so the rest of the oil can drain..seems like my rear end is gonna be jacked pretty high..is that correct?

Level is fine... Get two sets of ramps ad lower the rears onto the second set. Above level is marginally better, but not a big deal at all.

Or you could go all out...

Obviously if you have the expertise and facility to change your own oil do so. I myself was happy to watch a very capable local Vette mechanic do it for me. While up in the air I had the differential, transmission and coolant fluids changed. So as not to be called a complete wimp I replaced my own air filter element!

There was some jacking instruction I saw a while ago. They suggested jacking up the back of the car by placing some wood under the rear cross member and using a floor jack from the back of the car. Then place safty stands under the rear pucks. This raises the front enough to get a floor jack under the front cross member by going under the driver's door (between the front and rear wheel) to get to the front cross member. Then put safty stands under the front pucks and the car is up. I followed this procedure when I installed the shift lock out and changed the oil on my 2002 Z06 with no problems.

dude, ask around at the dealerships for what they will charge if you bring your own oil & filter. mine does it for $9.50 and they allow me to inspect the undercarrage while it's in the air. and there are dealerships you can trust!

thats correct, get a set of rhino ramps for the front. then jack up the rear with a 2 1/2 ton floor jack. use the center rear cross member for the jack point. jack it up till the car is level then watch more oil drain out.

i dont use jack stands in the rear since i am not going under there.

I'll check on dealer...I would never imagine that they would be willing to let me bring in the supplies..I could surely deal with $9.50 plus oil and filter!

You don't have to raise the back 8 inches over the front, just a couple will do.

BTW, raising the back only drains out 4 more ounces of oil. I do it, but you don't have to.

Hey thanks bud. They hover around $2k if you install it yourself (no big deal to do). It is 80" tall and will lift 7,000 lbs!

Best tool in the shed.

I did it myself without raising the rear. It was a mess when I pulled the filter out, but I caught most of it. I suggest an adjustable wrench for the drain plug.

70 bucks, Thats a good price, It will take you some time to do it yourself, You have to jack up the front and rear and the rear has to be higher. For 70 bucks I would have the dealer do it, You are going to pay 60 bucks just for the oil and filter....
6.50 a qt = 45.50
1 filter 10.00
My time is worth a lot more than 10-15 bucks and no mess to clean up.
