Ok, I know this has been beat up badly but i cannot find this symptom anywhere. why would my sensors be sending the wrong pressure to my readout? 5pounds off!!! any ideas???

Did you recently have your tires rotated? You should also re-train your sensors. If you have XXX instead of a pressure reading, then you have a dead sensor. If that happens, PM me and I can save you some big money on sensors.

Mine are off by a range of -2psi to +3 psi. Just remember what they are, and you will be fine.

Those sensors are at least 5 years old or older yet. Batteries probably starting to die by now.

I would try retraining them - it's a simple procedure that is outlined in the owner's manual. Should take about 5 minutes to do all four.

If that doesn't help - you might consider replacing them. I see your car is a '98....if they are the originals, then replacement isn't a bad idea.

Given that its a straight RF system it should be easy to troubleshoot. The way it works is that each sensor transmits a signal to the RFA once the car's been moving for a few minutes. The RFA sends the individual signals for each sensor to the PCM for display. The RFA is shared with the fobs. Logically, if the fobs work, the RFA is good and the links to the computer are good. That brings you back to the sensors. If they are all out by 5psi it may be a calibration problem and a retrain sounds like a good idea (it probably is in any case). If only one sensor is wrong then its that sensor.

All that said, on a 98 you're reaching the end of the battery life so I'd plan to replace them soon.

Don't forget youre are the older sensors, which are unfortunately more expensive.

If you have aftermarket wheels without sensors, can you disable the system altogether?

You can program them out with a Tech II on the later cars. Some members have fitted sensors inside the rims with bands. A vendor just came up with a mounting kit to hold them onto the rim with a stud of some sort.

1998 C5s can not have the TPMS turned off.

Sensors have the year and month stamped in the plastic (little date wheels with arrows pointing to manufacture date).

I would bet that your sensors are switched, re-learning them should fix that. OR you could measure all 4 tires and find which is which.

When the batteries start to go, you get some strange readings from the sensors.
