"For pure straight line performance and a civilized ride, I love the modded autos."
Could not agree more. having had both, the 6 spd. is sweet on winding road, but around town or at the drag strip in bracket racing, the A4 does the trick. Build it up with H/C, headers, etc. and you'll have a Z06 eater like my '99 A4 coupe. Too much fun and a great all around driver.
And thanks to Mike98silververt for the excellent breakdown of the Z06 differences. Lots of new info for me. If you want a 6 spd. car, sounds like there is a lot off extra performance content ro go with the additional 55 hp.
my first corvette is a '96 C4 auto...my other one is an '04 mn6....still love 'em both, but when i drive the C4 now, i get this "i've got nothing to do" feeling...i wish now i'd have gone with the 6 speed in the C4...
it's all about what you like and want in your vette. If you enjoy shifting and a little more power and visceral feel...then get the Z....if you want to just cruise and have a little more "cushy" ride...then get an auto coupe. I would get out and test drive a stick coupe, a vert and a Z.....so you can get a feel for all of them....unless you know what you want already.
i have always thought that a sports car should have a manual shift and a top that comes off. i settled for half of it. no regrets. its your moey and your car. get whatever you like.
I have had both, current car is a M6 and I love it-I don't drive the car alot but even if I did it woudn't bother me. All my Vettes have been coupes-I am not a big 'vert fan and I would never give up the targa top for a few extra horsepower.
